Help to fix a couple of minor problems in my MU

Postby dreamykiwi » Sun Oct 18, 2009 6:23 pm

I just bought a 1991 MU, yes its old and has had a hard life but I love the style and color. I had a new stereo put in and the electrician said the aerial motor is dead and needs a new one. I said can it have a standard aerial , he said not has to be motorized. why is this?

Also my reverse lights don't work, not sure if its the bulb or wiring, I went to change the bulb and took the lights off and cant figure out how o take the bulb out. any help would be appreciated cheers

Woman owner with little knowledge of how to fix cars but really wants to learn. thanks :D

I would go to a different electrician. They come standard with non motorized aerial
You have to take the lense of the light to get to the bulb

Hi Pig75, thanks for that, so any aerial that fits the shape of the guard will work in the MU?

And what do you mean by take the lense of the light, I have taken the whole light fitting off the mu, and when you turn it over its like a complete silver color back, Does this silver back come off somehow?

Your reverse light switch might be iffy,
its in the gear box so when you select reverse they come on,
only problem is this switch fails and is almost impossable to get to. ask your electrician to fit a manual switch,
also if you go off roading make sure your aerial is down they tend to catch on bushes & stuff

 thanks for all your help, I fixed the aerial myself, bought a $20 one and put it in by myself, it works perfectly and I don't even have to have it up. as for the reverse lights I am having a auto electrician look at it tomorrow.
So I have had the backdoor replaced due to it being dented and bogged up badly prior to me buying the MU, and have had to replace the inside door handle guards, I replaced the interior roof light, the previous owner decided to put a dvd in its place then let someone break the screen. I have replaced several little items that had been missing when i got it. Soon I am hoping to be able to paint it and have her back to her past glory. I love the MU :D

went out to start my MU this morning and its battery is flat. I noticed last night when I turned off the MU that the air condition fan stayed on even without the key in, So in the end I turned it off. I just jumpstarted the mu and took it around block several times, came home turned it off then on again worked perfectly. But the fan thing still is on, and it just drained the battery again. what is wrong with this old girl NOW please. Its nearly xmas and my mechanic is off until after new year.

To get you through xmas remember to turn the fan off at night to save the battery and buy a charger if you dont have one.
The interior fan is controlled by the charge relay which will have blown. The normal cause of this is a bad regulator in the alternator which means new alternator. A test of this would be to measure the voltage at the battery with the engine running. It should be 14.5 but I bet its 12.
New alternators cost about 800 but you can get them from a wreckers a lot cheaper especially if you pull it out yourself. Replacement should take 1 and a half hours but your first one will take a lot longer
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

hi got the alternator recon for $220 under the table xmas rate lol I was over the moon with that. But now some one was saying I should be looking at changing the cambelt, its done 171,000 ks. Then someone else said it could be cambelt or chain, can someone tell me how I would know if its chain or belt. Seems a chain is better.

and btw merry xmas everyone out there in Mu land have a safe one, take care on the roads and don't drive the Mu after drinking please.

If the cover behind the crank pulley is plastic it's a belt drive if it's alloy it's a gear drive

Hello again and Merry xmas happy new year, My new years fixit jobs for my MU.. When I bought the mu it has a broken drivers door mirror, not the glass but the plastic part. And the previous owner had clued it into one place lol. Well I have purchased a secondhand mirror in excellent condition. I have taken off the inside door cover and can not figure out how to unscrew the bolts that hold on the old mirror. Anyone changed the mirror on the doors? any help would be appreciated cheers
