Engine not cranking

Postby daone » Thu Oct 29, 2009 7:49 pm

Hi all ,

I am here again. My 91 2.8 4JB1T Manual Mu sometimes doesn’t start, no click no werr no nothing. Battery just replaced not long ago, and I tested the battery, the Voltage level is correct. This happened before and I just wait for a few mintues then it could start . I did fited a alarm system with immbrolizer 5 years ago. I am not sure it is the alarm problem which locking my starter or it is the starter motor problem. I did unplug the alarm wires from the alarm central unit. and still not start.
THen I tried tapping the start housing with a long rod and hammer, same starter is not cranking.

The MU drives normally, and when it could start the starter sound like very powerful, only 1 second cranking could start the enine.

Any sugestions on how to dionostic weather it is a starter motor problem or a alarm system please?

Appreciate your time
Thanks guys! :D :)

If I try to start my car too fast (immobiliser doesn't have time to read key & deactivate) then it trips the immobiliser.

When my alam's immobiliser trips, I have to disconnect the battery for about 5 mins before everything resets, then it acts normal again.

Could be an alarm wiring fault, causing immobiliser to activate...

Andy.

Hopefully someone else can be more helpful :-)

I reckon its ur starter.

My mitsi has the same problem a few years ago, unalarm the car, get in, key in ignition, turn key, WRRRRRR tic tic tic. Sound about right? "Most(Usually)" of the time it starts.

I thought it was the alarm aswell, turned out that it was not engaging the flywheel, but it was spinning the gear that meshes with the teeth on the flywheel.

Hope that helps a little.
Cheers,
Andrew

I had this a while ago and never realy got to the bottom of it before it came right by itself. Best way to test this is to fit a test light across the starter and other points along the starter electrics. If the light comes on there is power if it doesnt there isnt and look elswhere. I think from memory that mine was a worn key not turning the ignition lock far enough

Appreciate your times guys, thannks alot! Very helpful hints. I just talk to the auto sparkie this morning and he saids it may be the ingition switch faulty(contact point not contact proberbly). So if it happens again I will try the spare key to see if it works. Otherwise I will do something to the ingition switch contac points, eg sand it with fine sand paper. Will get updated what I have done in the future.

I had this problem is my camry a while ago... sprayed some wd40 into the fuse box under the bonnet (th one with all the realys) and this sorted it out... after having to sit and look at things for a while when the car would turn over it got a little annoying.

My Mu does this, I just try and park on a hill or keep a spanner handy to short out the starter (dodgy solenoid)

Hi all, time to update what I have to done. THanks for all the replys.
Firstly I used a test light, clamp the - on the test light to the vehicle body, and + to the starter solenoid wire(a thiner wire compare to the other wire on the starter) and ask my mate to switch the key to start position. Found there is no power feeds to the starter. Then I remove the bottom cover on the steering coloum. Then tested the ingation switch(test - clamp to the vehicle key, + to the ingition points 5 intotal I remember). I found power go through the ignition switch freely(acc, igntion, start). Then I know the switch is ok. Then I keep tracing the problem along the ingition wires, until I found a large connector, Found it a little bit loose, so unplug it then refit tightly(the connector is inside the lower panel in front of your knee. haha the vehicle starts again as it should. I will run the vehilce like this to see if this is the cause of the problem.
Hope this will help to people who have the same problem like main.
Thanks again guys!
