No Brake lights

Postby muzila » Fri Nov 13, 2009 11:37 am

My mate has a 96 3.1 auto MU. Nyce truck. But he has no working brake lights.

So this morning we attacked it. Checked all bulbs, fuses, wiring and the switch on the brake pedal.
All working fine. But still no power getting to the brake side of the bulbs. All the other lights work even the tail lights. Same bulb differant filament.

Any ideas where to look next? We need to get this fixed for the dreaded WOF and for safety.

From memory the earth is at the bulb and battery at the switch. Need to start at the switch and check battery there first

Do you have power at the socket for the bulb?? Even though the tail light works there will be another wire going in for the brake light. A wire could have rubed through somewhere between the front and back.
Good luck with that.

Good point Mulover. I will check that when I see him next.

Would it be possable for the brake peddel switch to be faulty even though it locks the trans when disconnected and if I put a multimeter across it I get contact/no contact pressin the button?

Not likely, sounds like the switch is working fine. You could also have a dry joint somewhere in the brake light system, good luck finding one of those though!!!

Found the fault. it was a broken pin in the plug in the wire loom where the wires split to go to both lights. dam thin was hard to find but.

Good find. Finding is frequently a lot harder than fixing

Yea so tru. I start to cringe these days when a mate says I got an electrical problem in my car/truck.

Even when my own plays up nowa days I start to think is it really THAT expencive to pay an auto sparky to find the fault. Then the gurlfriend belts me ova the back of the head and I wake up and go fault hunting. lol
