Dont think there is any hard and fast rule but its definatly not wise to squirt cold water on a hot turbo or if you have fitted an open pod filter spraying that while the engine is going.
This is a personal method. Get the engine fully warm then turn off and let sit for 10 or 20 minutes restart and let idle while water blasting. Be carefull not to dislodge any vacume lines or wireing.
If its checking for oil leaks it might be better toget a couple of spray cans of degreaser ,spray them on and just hose off.
Favourite oil leaks are front and rear crank seal and loose oil filter especially if you use Ryco filters. These have a habit of coming loose on Isuzus.
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Thanks Geeves, yes I am going to check where the oil is leaking from. So I may just use the water frrom the hose to be safe. Appreciate your time.
