relays

Postby Hamdog » Sat Jun 13, 2015 9:08 am

ok so i have the 3 lights on my dash , although they are very dim ,and im getting normal charge from the alternator , i have 2 brown relays in my fuse box , one is where the charge relay should be and the other is next to it i think in the horn relay position .

should i just change the horn one to a black one ? im guessing it shouldnt be a brown one, also last time i went to get another relay there were different types, ones with resistors and ones without, does it matter what ones i use?

Charge relays are normally blue or brown as far as I know.

yeah i know that , just wondering why the horn has a brown one , swapped them over and the dash lights are off now , but still wondering about the black relays with resistors or not

hey geeves eb22 is the charge relay , well im assuming , and eb23 is the horn, both of them had a brown relay , i swapped them around and no longer have the 3 lights on the dash and my heater is now working normally too which is a bonus

ok so my heater isnt working like it should, aparently the charge relay has something to do with this but i cant see how it can affect the heater, anyone know what relay /fuse the heater is on? it runs hot for about 5 seconds then starts blowing cooler air than it should

The blower motor won't run if the charge relay has failed.

I don't think it has anything to do with the hot/cold selection. That's mechanical on my Bighorn.

factory wiring for the heater and windows is through the live side of the alternator. If the charge relay isnt activated they dont have power

Has it got the temperature control? mine has and it could hardly be called precice. It varies at least 5 deg each way depending on how it feels. Yesterday it wouldnt heat unless set to 25 but today it was cooking me at 20

it does but doesnt even blow warm unless i put it right up to 30, and then it will only blow hot for 5-10 seconds and then blow cold air through

could be

starting to think the heater core is blocked tho,its like the heat coming through is only residual heat , and a while back the coolant pipe going to my turbo was completely blocked with rust particles so maybe the heater core is blocked with the same thing

very possible.
I was surprised about 6 months after having a head replaced to have a radiator leak at the join between the top tank and core. It was caused by a fillet of rust that had jammed itself into the rubber oring. Radiator shop did a quick rodding of the core at the same time and reconed it was 30%blocked. radiator has always had full strength antifreeze in it. All hard metallic particles. Most people think the chinese heads are as good as factory but certainly they dont take the necessary care with cleaning out the machinings

yeah when i got the wizard there was no antifreeze in it,just plain water , had some overheating problems with heavy loads uphills the last 6 months , its got a new radiator, new thermostat re done the viscous fan ,half the hoses are new ,thats how i found all the rust in the turbo cooling pipe, if i didnt have to replace the hose i would never have noticed it, so maybe on a sunny weekend ill have a go at cleaning out the heater core

A product Ive used in the past as a flush was called Teekay. Even in an old Cortina with no antifreeze the water did not go rusty again. Unfortuanatly it cracked a head when the bottom hose failed and the temp guage wasnt working. Fixed that and it got stolen never to be seen again
