15 amp fuse blowing!

Postby Isuzumu3point1 » Fri Sep 04, 2015 9:41 am

Anyone know why this fuse is blowing?
It's the 15 amp fuse in the interior fuse box I believe it's for the EGR. When I start the car it blows. Just changed the alternator and it's still doing it. Anyone have any ideas? It's a 1996 MU 3.1 TD
Thanks

Sounds like it also supplys the fuel cut off solinoid. Try running a wire direct from the battery to the solinoid with a 15 amp in line fuse in the wire start the engine and remove the fuse to confirm. There will be a short somewhere possibly a wire chaffing against the block but they can be cows to find if they keep disapearing

Have you had any other work done on your vehicle lately?
I had a similar problem once on a Mu I bought. It had had the clutch replaced recently and they had pinched the engine wiring loom between the engine and gearbox when re-assembling.

Where can I find the fuel cut off solenoid? And which terminal on the solenoid should I run the wire from?
No other work has been done to it since I've had it. Just filters and oil changed and of course a new alternator.

The fuel cut off solenoid is part of your Injector Pump on the left hand side of your engine (opposite side to your alternator). From memory it is a single wire connected by a bullet or spade terminal (close to your pump and fiddly to get to). There are also several other wires in this area (TPS, revcounter and maybe a CSD). These wires, in conjunction with your oil pressure sender wire(s) and low oil pressure switch wire, form a loom that runs rearward and over the back of your engine to the main wiring loom on the right hand side of your car.

Success! It's looking like a wire has chaffed somewhere. Ran a wire from the fuel solenoid to the battery heard a click, so that's good. Turned the key and hey presto! She runs!!

So, here's the next big question to a quick fix. Rather than tracing the wire around looking for the chaff. Could I just hard wire the solenoid onto the ignition power, bypassing EGR-QOS fuse? Or will this create problems for the EGR and whatever other systems relating to this fuse?

I would look for it first and if that fails run the new wire to the fuse cutting away the old wire
I had a similar problem in an old rover
On starting sometimes the ampmeter would go to 30A and nothing else happened. Took the wires off the relay and held together with fingers while turning the key
I still have the imprint from those wires on my finger and thumb some 25 years later

does anyone have a wiring diagram for 1996 isuzu mu 3.1 TD. I want to see what connects to the EGR-QOS relay and possibly run new wires. but, i need to see a wiring diagram to see what needs to be wired into the fuse.
tried putting a new fuse in today after jiggling wires around yesterday and she started no problems. took it for a quick ride; maybe 300 metres and she dies. fuse blew. luckily i had the new wire i used for the fuel solenoid still sitting in the engine bay so was able to pop that on and get it back home

Ok, so I still haven't resolved this issue. Reading a few other posts I believe it might be the fuel cut off solenoid that's knackered. Does anyone know the part number or an alternative solenoid from another vehicle that will fit a 3.1 TD engine?
