Charging issues 4jg2t

Postby MaoriUtility » Thu Feb 11, 2016 5:38 pm

Hello people,
on start up all the warning lights on my dash stay lit up, timing belt, fuel, oil level, brake and battery. But when I get the revs up to 2500 they all turn off, however the volt meter is only reading 12v. It's running dual batterys, unsure of how this is set-up or how it affects the charging.
My first action was to change out the charge relay.
I've done that with no change, warning lights still come on.
What do I do next?

after market alternators commonly do this although 1000 rpm should get a good reading. The voltmeters are not that accurate. Measure across your battery a a few rpms. Above idle it should be 14 to 14.5
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Ok, I haven't yet put the multimeter on. But I did
1. get rid of the second battery, which was wired directly to the starter and not running through an isolator
2. replaced the old battery with a new one.

Results...
Turn car on and volt meter shows around 10v
Started fine last night, didn't turn over this morning(maybe out of fuel)

But the voltage has me scratching my head, so I'll be borrowing a multimeter today to see what's really happening

I hope things get better soon...the MU is proving more work and money than fun

So very happy right now, I went out bought a new v-belt for the "new" alternator. Read the thread on changing said alternator....not being mechanically experienced I thought I did ok, although it took me about 6 hours and not the mentioned 2 lol.
So before the change I did the multimeter thing.

Not running 12.4v
Running @ 1000rpm 12.2v
Running @ 1500rpm 12.5v

After new alternator

Not running 12.4v
Running @ 1000rpm 12.9v
Running @ 1500rpm 13.9v

So yeah I'm satisfied...only concern is there's still a little squeal when running But I can put up with that for another week...
So cheers guys...all the info on here is worth its weight in gold

squeal is most likely a loose belt. New belts often stretch in the first week or 2 of use.
It is possible you have the wrong belt. Some makers measure the inside of the belt some outside so different brands with the same number can be different lengths

Yeah thought it looked a little bit loose, it's 15A1030 type, the one I pulled off had a different part number.
Also driving it this morning the radiator temp guage wasn't working...any ideas?

You have probably just knocked a connector in the thermostat housing area. Just check that all are still fitted correctly. There is generall 3 or 4 wires around this area.

The alternator belt on my 3.1 was a 15A1030, I changed it to a 15A1015. Next time you change the belt maybe you could try that?.
