Tightening alternator belt.

Postby wells598 » Sun Apr 17, 2016 8:41 am

Hi all I'm looking for a walkthrough of how to tighten the belt as I'm getting an annoying whining even when the Mrs isn't in the wagon

One issue that does come up on that engine is that different belt makers number the belts differently and that is the belt most likely to cause an issue. Some measure the inside some the out. If you are at the end of the adjustment fit the next size smaller belt.
Most 4jg2s have an adjuster on the end of the ark for the alternator which makes life much easier.
First loosen the 2 bolts on the bottom of the alternator then loosen the bolt through the alternator to the ark.
If you have the adjuster use this to tighten the belt If not remove the battery then use a tyre leaver or long screw driver to lever the alternator away from the block and with it tensioned do up the ark bolt.
Tighten all loosened bolts job done have a cold beer (or warm if you prefer)
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Always easier with the battery out but if it has a bolt on the end of the ark it can be done without removing the battery although you have to use more swear words and bandaids in the progress
