I was about to say yes then looked at where you are.
In USA the 2.8 and 3.1 engines were Chevy sourced v6 gasoline engines
In the rest of the world they were 4 cylinder diesels.
The diesels are interchangable but you might need to play with the fly wheel
The gasoline chevy engines Im not sure but think they are the same
Of course you cand swap gasoline and petrol
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Looking by the year, I guess he owns an imported UBS69. That would be a 4 cylinder 3.1 diesel engine (4JG2T), not the chevy V6 version.
If that's the case a 2.8 MUA gearbox will bolt straight to the 3.1 engine.

I should of looked at that although sometimes the question is about another project car.
Gearbox will fit but the 2.8 gearbox has a spline at the back and the 3.1 a flange. You need to swap the driveshaft of output on the gearbox. Also the selector is different between bighorn and Mu and ute. This can also be swaped over but not as easy

You didnt say one was auto one manual.
You have a few issues to solve.
One has a fly wheel the other a flex plate. Thats easy
extra pedals plus the hydrolic clutch set up A bit of fun but you have all the parts in the donor
Gearbox mounts are in different places Have to either cut and weld cross members or make an adapter. What do your local rules allow
Driveshafts are different lengths. Also they are different lengths between the vehicles. Need to make new driveshafts or find some online for the 3.1 bighorn manual
Might need to move exhaust
Otherwise its an easy swap
