If you have a volt meter try checking the voltage going to the starter solenoid when the key is turned to start. Low voltage due to a dodgy relay can drop the voltage enough to cause problems like yours.

It does sound like either a flat battery or dirty battery terminals. Do the same tests again with a voltmeter with the volts on it or multimeter
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Do the same test directly across both the battery posts and the outside of the battery terminals.
My money is on either a flat battery or a white oxide on the inside surfaces of the battery terminals. If you have the lead type batery clamps they get an oxide on them which is white hard to remove and quite a good insulator
