Wiring diagram for rodeo

Postby slightlydodgy » Thu Dec 10, 2009 4:57 pm

Does anyone know where I can find a wiring diagram for a 1990 Rodeo 2.6 petrol carbie manual model TFSFWF. Its not always firing on start up. Has 13v at coil and dizi wiring on cranking. Cranks at full snort and has a new battery Once running sweet as. Also have a vaccum switch that has never been connected since we have had it and wondered what it was supposed to do. Thanks guys and girls

If you have 13v at the coil the next question is do you have spark at the plugs? If yes then its either timing or a fuel problem . There will be a fuel cut off solenoid on the carby to prevent run on

No spark, new ignighter leave for 20min or so and then starts first flick. All parts from dizzy to plugs have been tested/ replaced only leaves wiring

Nope. old man had one in a starlet and said that it should have been a "cheque for engine light" Also only got 3 wires to carb, oil and temp sensors, no aircon, power windows etc. is a bare bones model .

Here you go Image Bare eh? All the ignition wiring is on the left between the battery and the firewall and brake booster. The motor is definetely a 4ZE1. The unknown vacuum switch is under the red ht coil lead. Yes geeves (he who notices everything) the airfilter wingnut is missing -will replace tomorrow. and the power steering bracket is not original this ute didnt have powersteer when I bought it :o and the unit I bought came out of a deisel so belt set up was different and it didnt have a idler pulley with it.

Did you check for spark at the coil. Some aftermarket leads are terrible for breaking down when hot etc. Cant beat the old fashioned wire leads for reliability but not so good for the stereo.
Hadnt noticed the missing nut and wouldnt of as we were looking several inches away at the electrics

When it throws a tanty there is no spark at all (cranks at full noise) but 13v at coil and low tension dizzy leads. All ht leads plugs caps and rotors etc are new and so is the firing module (try finding 1 of those) when it first did it you gave the ht coil lead a wiggle and away you go. Replaced lead and noticed that all ht components were factory issue at 225000ks :o Rotor and cap were munted. Then giving 2 other wiress a wiggle seemed to do it - turned out they were reverse and 4x4 gearbox wires but after a while that didnt work either. The real bugger is that you can only get a sparky to look at it when its faulting but by the time they get to it it starts first pop. Never does it first thing in the morning but then it could be anytime next time you turn it off or a week later usually on the main street in town or when you really need it.

Replace the coil unless its new. Also replace the capacitor inside the dizzy. I had an old vauxhaul victor that did this Never did solve it but it would just die at any time that a failure to move would cause great embarrassment ie half way through busy intersection. Operating the points by hand a couple of times would first see no spark then it would return and you could drive on. The coil also failed causing poor running so a coil from a wreckers went in. When you put a ballast type coil without ballast in a non ballast system you get a good big meaty spark (3 inch long spark) but be careful that you have well insulated pliers when pulling a lead off a running engine.

Ok I am assuming this motor has the same dizzy as the 4ZD1 witch it should not
If it has a vacuum advance unit on the dizzy and a reluctor pickup it’s the same as the 4ZD1
If it has no vacuum advance unit and optical pickup 4ZE1. it will have a ECM to adjust the timing
Check your air gap on the reluctor it needs to be between 0.30mm and 0.5mm. Then check your timing it should be 6deg with the vacuum advance line disconnected.
If all that is correct the only other thing is a bad connection between the coil and ignition module and or the module and reluctor pickup.

[quote="slightlydodgy"] firing module (try finding 1 of those) [quote]

If it’s a reluctor pickup it’s easy old valiant’s have a module that work as do sigma’s or any of the Holden shuttle vans. also bosch have a module

That's the same as a rb gemini. It's a reluctor pickup with a internal module

A common conversion is to put the Rb Gemini internals into a T series Gemini dizzy to replace the points. So it could be done
But i would be keeping the electronic dizzy.
Like i said i would be checking the air gap and timing
Too much air gap and it will be hard to start
