Air gap and timing are good were done after the firing module was replaced (in an effort to stop this) Would it be the optical pickup? Have also noticed that the rev counter will bounce when the engine is running smooth sometimes -very rare though

It's a magnetic pick up. Have never seen one play up.
Did you set the air gap? I don't trust mechanics

Its been so long since Ive touched a coil I cant remember if they earth through the dizzi or through the case. Confirm this before trying the below suggestion. If it earths through the case you dont need the earth lead but dont know which of the 2 terminals to conect the battery to.

Get a 2 meter long pieces of insulted wire and strip the ends and leave this in the truck. Next time it does it remove both leads on the coil and connect one end of one wire to the coil. The other end of this wire to earth. Then hook the other wire to the other coil terminal and touch the other end on the battery. When you remove the lead from the battery you should get a spark on the ht lead. This proves the coil to be ok
Also have a look at your plugs. If the center electrode has minor erosion this is correct. If its severely pitted the capacitor has gone If there is erosion on the outer electrode instead of the center swap the 2 leads over on the coil
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

what about the wires between the dizzy and coil. maybe one of them has a broken wire?

that was my thinking as the wires from the coil /dizzy go back into the wiring loom and I have no idea where they go without unwrapping the whole shebang

bypassed the negative side of the coil ie dizzy to coil and it had no spark instantly put it back and go first pop. I talked to a wrecker in Auckland today (he thought he knew all there was about isuzu ignition until he talked to me) and he suggested check everthing again and then wire in a external reluctor/firing module as there are cheaper and more common ones availble (as you mentioned eariler) as my new internal, expensive and hard to find one might be dying. Apparently it happens Which model valient, mitzi sigma etc should I be looking for?

Any valiant or sigma with electronic ignition for the module but you need the duel ballast resistors and the plugs as well

I gave up and bought a second hand dizzy out of a running trooper today for $100. Wish Id done it months ago instead of replacing the firing module which cost $230. 20 mins to install and started first pop. Touch wood it keeps going. If this solves everything it means that it was probably the timer in the dizzy
