Headlights and key

Has anyone linked the headlights to the key so that key off, lights off?

Ive done similar, what year? fwd me the wiring diagram and I am happy to make suggestions, It will add a layer of risk of headlights failing, how about a 1or2 amp fuse, buzzer and diode between the headlights [before the dip sw] and key acc, then it'll sound if you leave lights on and key off, it may also sound during cranking if the acc gets turned off. this way if it fails you don't loose your lights. My 97 wizard already has a lights on key off buzzer, I hate it but a flat battery is worse.

Extra trans cooler in series & before radiator trans cooler.
airlift airbags in rear springs running 5-25psi, so far worked a treat, no longer bottoms out with 5 people and gear and still doesn't rattle me one up and empty. Watch the us paddle switches as my first pair leak. I've air electric replacements yet to fit.

Headlights off and sidelights on, or all lights off with key?
Need the diagram that shows the lighting switch.

If that's the best diagram

Then cut the wire that supplies the headlight switch and join each end to the contacts of a relay.the two winding wires of the relay one to ground and one to acc. ( Blue/black) via a 2amp fuse.
Then the headlights will only operate while the key is on account or on. Note depending on the key setup lights may turn off during cranking.
