Starter motor replacement

Postby noose75 » Sun Oct 20, 2019 7:43 pm

Hi all,
I’m needing to replace my starter motor in my 3.1 Mu 4jg2
Does anyone know where to buy (Brisbane) or the aftermarket part people are using? TIA

I've got the same question..

Partsouq original OEM part number is 8943876530, and the listed new OEM number is 8972553901. Doing a little research reveals the new OEM starter is a 2kW starter, and the original is a 2.8kW starter. Not sure what to do here, and all the aftermarket starters are from brands that are difficult to establish pedigree for. Any advice?

fairly certain the starter is common to all 4jb1 and 4jg2 engines. Second hand this includes vans and small trucks. Starters are available on aliexpress so I expect they are also on ebay

Ah, understood. My concern is that if I replace a 2.8kW starter with a 2kW starter, will the 2kW be enough to turn the engine over? Or is 2kW enough because 2.8 was way more than it needs? Or is the gearing ratio in the 2kW different so it produces as much torque as the 2.8kW? Am I overthinking this..... :?

Ok, thanks for your feedback. Do you know if Ashika is a good brand?

I replaced mine with a cheap chinese starter that I bought on Ebay, it only cost around $150 (Aus dollars) and has been operating flawlessly for about 3 years now. I might get the original starter reconditioned and use it as a spare. The original starter motor was a real pain to get out, it took me about half an hour of jigling it around to remove it, and I was happy to find that the aftermarket starter has a slightly different housing designed to make it easier to put in.
