1994 3.1 auto trans repairable?

Postby benny » Sat Jul 24, 2010 11:28 am

Hi I seem to have worn out another transmission it won't go into reverse or overdrive after giving it a bit of a hard time in a bog hole for about an hour or so. Is there an easy fix or should I just bite the bullet and replace it, I can pick up a trans for $300 NZ.
Cheers Brendon.

check the electrical connections first. The overdrive is electronicaly controlled. Also check the fluid. If pale pink and foamy change it quickly. Its got water in it. If its dark red or brown and smells like a badly overdone steak (the sort you have to blow out ) new trans

Thanks for the info but have checked everything exturnal, fluid colour and levels all fine, I have heard the autohubbed automatics dont like being shifted from 1st to reverse alot, and the box is also slipping like it did when I cooked it the first time, so I might have to replace I think. It also has extra radiator thingy to cool trans fluid thought this might make it bullet proof. Can you buy manual hubs for these?

Tomorrow I will take the sump off it and see if the filter is blocked, this may give a little more insight, will keep all posted.
Cheers,

Auto hubs wont hurt the auto
The problem with auto hubs is on a failed hill climb they will unlock and lock again the other way by which time youve done 3 meters or so in rwd Not fun or very safe on a slope you car is going down whether you like it or not and the car isnt fussy about how it goes down.

Have had the auto checked out it is quite bad news, all bands need replaced so I have opted for the cheaper option of a secondhand box and reconditioned torque converter, exhaust leak under the turbo, oil feed leak under the turbo and recondition steering box. I'm really not looking forard to the bill but don't have time to fix it myself boo hoo! On the upside should be good for another 50,000 km's.

I have had this vehicle for around five years, on the third trans, the one I had put in two years ago must have been stuffed ( checked out by an expert) as the new one I have now is bloody awesome and has restored my faith in the old beast, they are really smooth when working properly.
