Dry Joints

Postby slightlydodgy » Thu Apr 01, 2010 5:38 pm

My front suspension has started to squeak real bad when turning the wheels or when you go over anything. It tends to suggest dry ball joints to me, the top ones are new and have grease nipples. The bottom ones are probably 20 years old but dont seem to have any slop in them and the rubbers are good. How do I grease these? Suspension man in New Plymouth said they need replacing Do they? Thanks for your thoughts

If they are like this and have no play they soon will. To test for play you need to use a crowbar as the front spring keeps them in tension. You could muck around removeing the joint then the boot which is not easily available if it rios and squish some grease in that way but its rarely successful. For the effort of stripping down I would just replace it. They are not expensive. As its your farm hack leave it till next wof

spray the front end with silicon spray like I did. he he he.

It got rid of the squeaking and allowd me time to get replacment parts with out noises.

Not a long term fix though.

Did the passenger side today -forgot to wind off the torsion bar before starting but otherwise all good. However gave the wheel a rock when finished and discovered the lower a arm bushes are also stuffed. Any words of wisdom before I start?
