2.3LSD into front of 2.8

Postby mudgrip4 » Sun Aug 01, 2010 8:17 am

I have a tightened LSd running redline heavy duty shockproof oil in the rear of my 2.8 and it is a very good traction aid. I have noticed no difference between this and the locker I previously had in the rear.

I now have available a rear diff with lsd from an earlier 2.3 model - which I've often heard is the same as the front diff of the 2.8. Considering putting this into the front of my 2.8 also.

Haven't really inspected the two diff setups yet, but can anyone tell me where precisely thay are the same - i. e. same interchangeable diffhead, same structure between the hubs (which sounds unlikely), or what is required if I was to attempt to put the 2.3 lsd unit into the front 2.8 housing. Is it a hubs off, half-shafts out, straight in swap, or would you have to have it out on the bench and reset carrier bearings etc.

Thanks, Mike.

rumour has it that they are a straight head swap but Ive never seen one in the flesh so cant verify.
My biggest worry is that it might spin the wrong way

Spin the wrong way? That would not be pretty. Should be easy enough to check.

Also what ratio were the old 2.3s - mine is a 4.31 diff 2.8.

Front drive shaft compatibility - guage, length and fitting?

4.56. When you think about things the diff will spin backwards but also if the transfer case uses a single gear to give forwards so will the driveshaft. Two backs make a front.
You need a 2.8 Mu rear diff

Too much trouble I think with having to drop out and replace the rear diff as well. An option for someone with an existing 4.56.
