Gear box rubbing breast plate under torque.

Postby Noxangelus » Mon Jul 20, 2009 7:46 am

I've bought a new gear box mount as the 2nd hand ones I bought to replace the collasped orginal one didn't fix the problem, even the new one hasn't fixed the gear box from hitting the breast plate. I suspect the engine mounts need replacing, it all happened in space of a week when I noticed a ratteling which sounded like apart of the exhuast hitting something. But a mechanic discovered it was a collasped gear box mount.

My question is, is it likely that its an engine mount or all of them or something else?

There seems to be alot of weight on that gear box mount, and under torque moving up the gears it will bottom out on the bottom of the mount itself. Also at around the same time my clutch and gear box all seem loose, when the car is idling and the clutch isn't compressed theres a rattle you can hear, and when you compress the clutch, it stops. Don't know if thats all related, also 2nd has started to pop out of gear recently. The gear box was pretty tight a year ago, so was the clutch.

Sounds like engine mounts as well as gearbox. Mine has had both engine mounts changed but still has the original gearbox mount. It fixed the jumping out of second and gearstick moveing 2 inches to the right when you rev the engine.
They are a pain to do. Its best to unbolt the bracket from the engine and bolt the new mount to the bracket on the bench. Even then its over an hour a side. Its 6 hours a side to do the normal way
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

i have the same rattle in my gearbox and it stops when i put the clutch in.I got told by a mechanic that its the front main bearing that is worn and is at least $1500 to replace so i got a second opinion from a proper brake and clutch specialist and he said it sounds like what they call `torque rattle`which he said replacing the clutch will fix.I have not had the time off work to get something done about it.my gears also seem really loose too but was told that is a worn gear selector which i believe is just a bit of rubber to be replaced. If you could let me know how you went with yours and if what i have been told is true that would be great....cheers

There is a plastic bush where the end of the gear stick goes in to on top of the gear box. This could be floged out. Had replaced mine a while ago and it made a big difference to the amount of play in the gear stick.

you can access it by removing the gear lever cover and trim, the whole gear lever selector is held on by three bolts. Here is a picture of it http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w44/jer01111/S2010002.jpg
