4wd problems

Postby driftnalday » Tue Sep 08, 2009 12:26 pm

I have a 92 Bighorn with auto hubs. theres no 4wd button so it must be shift on the fly but theres no box on my front axel anywhere to indicate any vaccum pump or whatever it is. when ever I kane it in 4wd the stub axel will pop the little clip of the end disengage from the hub and just rattle round in there. Can any1 tell me how they work? does the SOTF force the front axels out to engage 4wd?

You do not have shift on the fly just auto hubs. When you put it in 4wd the hubs lock in when you reverse they unlock and then lock in reverse. too unlock the front hubs take it out of 4wd and travel in the opsite direction for about 3 meters

Bigest cause of the circlip popping is a large suspension lift. A replacement circlip might help as might fitting manual hubs but you should look at your lift. If you have lifted it so you needed a ball joint flip and a trimmed or low profile bump stop then you are likly to strike this. Only fixes are reduce lift or lower the diff.
What size tyres are you running and how high are you at the front guard

The other thing to watch our for is having the correct size circlip - the correct metric one is a snug fit and wont pop off easily, however I had one on my Rodeo that must have been an imperial equivalent or something - it looked the same size but was about a half mm bigger inner diameter when you compared the two, and it did not sit tight enough in the groove to stay put.

ok thanks now I understand how they work. yep I have added a new circlip that snug so ill have to try it out and see. also im running 175 tires so I wouldn't think the height would be a issue

cheers for the help.
