94 Bighorn Auto gearbox

Postby Kenneth » Mon May 11, 2009 1:28 pm

94 Bighorn Auto gearbox. Oil cooler fitted.
My vehicle stopped driving while towing my caravan. No nasty noises, Just ceased to transmit. Replaced the gearbox with second hand one and it packed up again while towing the caravan after about 100km. No nasty noises. Replaced gearbox again and it packed in after about 50k, not towing the van this time, again no nasty noises. To me this points to a Computer fault as the fault could not be in the gearbox itself, but would like to hear any comments.
I have spent so much time in the garage lying on my back under the bighorn I now refer to the garage as the leasure center. COL (Crying out loud)

Have you had a auto trans specialist look over the trans to tell you what happened. To get 3 autos fail in such a short time is very unusual and as you say does point to something outside the box. Your suggestion of the computer is good but also the trans cooler could be faulty. Nissan Terranos use essentialy the same box and have real problems with the cooler blocking due to there radiator design

Yes The gearbox was checked out at first change as it need some wiring change. I have checked the oil cooler and it seems OK. When it packed up last time I was not pulling the caravan.

Might have to get them to diagnose the broken box. Might cost a few bucks but they have the tools and expertise to do this.
