All the manuals I have show the colum as one piece. Theres got to be something in there but it growls somethig wicked when you turn the wheel quickly

Maybe check the horn wire/scraper/contactor as it may have worn through and/or have no grease on it.

Good thought but Ive just tryed it with the switch assembly removed. Still growls. Got some good penetrating oil onto the end of the shaft Hopefully it soaks into something usefull.
Hopefully its not a vibration from the steering box thats traveling up the shaft and causing the bulkhead to vibrate

Undo the steering shaft U-Joint to isolate the shaft from the box & then try.

Further diagnosis on this one
With the steering shaft disconnected from the box and the steering wheel removed the noise is still there.
The book shows the column as a single assembly and the top bearing appears to be crimped in. Penetrating oil hasnt helped
Any thoughts please???
at least I know a wheel isnt going to fall off

Its fixed
Also if anyone else has this there is an easy way.
I was all set to drill a hole in the outer casing of the column when I noticed that one of the screw holes that mount the cowling around the shaft was in the shaft. A quck check showed it went all the way through so got the can of trusty penetrating oil with the long tube attached.Poked it in the hole and squirted.Problem gone.
If anyone else has this then the bottom screw in the center of the cowling can be removed on its own and the tube inserted without any other dismantaling Not the 6 or 8 hours Ive spent on this
