Steering Box leaking

Postby reptilechick » Thu Oct 22, 2009 3:49 pm

Hi guys,

My power steering leaks and I have been told that the steering box is the problem and needs to be replaced. Can I use a rodeo/jackeroo one or does it need to be a MU one? I am looking at quotes from NZ, not sure if I would find one in oz or if anyone knows??

thankking you all in advance, I would be lost without this forum!

I could have a go at doing it myself and some of my mates have offered to change it for me, not sure how much I trust them though! My problem is I am limited with tools. It looks like it is a PITA to get to as well.
May be taking a drive over to Townsville soon to see dad (Diesel engineer) so he can do it all!
In the mean time, I am just watching the fluid. Need new bushes now too cos of the fluid, u guys know where I can chase them down?

There is a very good how to in the DIY guides,
Its very good, because i did it!!! lol, you don't need much, just a few spanners, a cordless drill, self tappping screw and a screw driver or 2.
The easiest way to get to it is to take the wheel off.
Oh how i miss my mu, the lux is just not the same :(

Yeah its real easy to do, take off right front wheel, peel back the black (muddy) cover and youll see the top of the box right where the seal needs replacing, easy peasy.

8 times out of 10 this will work but these shafts have a habit of rusting in which case the seal wont last long. Probably not such an issue where you live but we get a lot of rain and drive in the sea. If there is heavy rust on the shaft its better to replace the box

Reptilechick...While it can be easy for someone with experience...steering isnt one to learn on...cracking balljoints and removing drop arms are not for the feint hearted. The steerbox is a pita to remove from between the chassis, the engine and the radiator.

I have replaced about 5 in Rodeos and MUs and doing either the seal or R&R the steering box is not a simple 5 minute task.

I would try the Nulon powersteering fluid before you rip everything apart. It is a seal reviver and will soften then seals and give them a new life for a few years....how long do you intend to keep the vehicle. I got another three years after using the fluid.

Goodluck whichever you choose.

Matt.

I had no experience with steering boxes on Mus when i removed mine, yes its a c**t to get to but it all adds to the experience.

I would say the hardest part is removal and replacement of the box, seal itself "should" be easy.

it helps if you remove the radiator or the bottom hose.
Cheers,
Andrew

It is possible to do the seal in place as per mulovers instruction. Do expect it to be easy though. Getting a seal to line up right can be fiddly at the best of times but doing by touch round a corner and tapping it in requires lots of patience and probably an expanded vocabulary.

I replaced my steering box not long ago for the first time.

Worst bits were splitting the ball joint on the steering linkage, and getting the new box into place...

Was a frustrating job, but I saved a lot of money by not sending it to the mechanic...

Let's just say I'll be nicer to this steering box and hope it doesn't let go like the last one.

Hey guys, thanks again for the advice. On a drive up to Townsville to get dad to fix it for me, and a few other things. Will print out everything here for him to read.

Mattmu I have used stop leak for a few months now but it still leaks out everywhere, although the fluid hardly drops. The stop leak hasnt helped at all.

Can I use Rodeo bushes too?? Seems like everything is starting to go wrong in my MU now :(
to fix: a/c comp, power steering, buses, cv boots, brake master cylinder, radiator has a crack too now from a roo last nite......car has been great the last 3yrs now everything is falling apart :(
