Pinion seal in rear diff

Postby geeves » Thu Oct 29, 2009 2:15 pm

Has anyone done one of these?
I have the seal but there seems to be a discrepancy between the the procedure in the book which wants a major rebuild with new bearings and crush washers etc and what others are telling me which is to count the threads and put the nut back on with the same number of turns.
Back of the car is covered in diff oil and smells real nice

If it's just the seal just count the turns. If the center is out you can set it by the preload
I did one about 3 months ago

How do you know if the center is out. It doesnt make any more noise than my mud tyres. (even my road tyres are muds)

If you take the dif center out of the housing you can then set your bearing preload. There is no need to take the diff center out just to do the seal

Pinion seals are fairly easy, just mark everything with a marker or center dot and count the turns off, then just put everything back to the way it was after.
A random question, are there any solid spacers and shims available to replace the collapsible spacer?

Without knowing the true purpose of the collapsable spacer and why the manufacturer of pretty much all diffs does it this way its probably a question with a dangerous answer

From what I have read the later model jackaroo has a shimmed pinion. I don’t know if it fits the early housing

They are used as it is far easier, faster and cheaper for manufactures to use collapsible spacers

The pinoin seal is easy to do, i think its a 36mm socket you need, and you will probably have to make up a bit of a jig to hold the flange still. I used a bit of flat bar and drilled a couple of holes. Deffinately buy a new nut, they are a genuine part only, but are not that expensive and worth it just to be sure.

Thanks. Luckily my neighbour was able to loan me a 36mm socket and the handbrake was enough to hold the diff still. How important is the new nut as I used the old one? The book says to stake the nut in 4 places but there was no marks on this nut

Mine was only staked in one place to, i wan't so keen on re-staking it in the same place. If your confident that its not going to come un-done then it should be fine.

Is that the seal that is at the front of the rear diff - where the rear driveshaft attaches to flange?
