If its to be road legal talk to your local certifier first. They get a bit funny about non factory SOA. Something to do with axle tramp I think

A lot of work in that I recon. wouldnt it be just as easy to put a 5 point link in the back and have coils?? then you get the flex.

Guess you would have to SAS the front then defeating the purpose. HHmmm

im looking for a hilux solid front axle at the moment to use in the future. but that wont get done till late next year. just looking into what options ive got for the rear?? ive also been thinking of putting the coil rear end mounts of a 3.1 bighorn in and shorting the panhard rod as i belive the 3.1 ba lill wider in the chassis

I am going to be doing a full SAS late next year as well. Havn't worked out the front yet but the back is going to be coils in a 5 point link. Interesting idea about the bighorn set up. I havn't looked at those. Myte have to find one to crawl under. I plan on using GQ,GU diffs.

I've measured up a prado front end and all the mounts appear to line up pretty well. I've been told that you can bolt the body of a mu on a swb bighorn chassis, an easy way of getting coils

I am basing the refit along the lines of Muvit and Flyers? SAS jobs. The rear looks rather straight forward its the front diff thats going to be a bit harder.

I was planning on using a prado front axle and swapping the mounts over onto my mu, that way I would have a soild axle coil front end that isn't crazy high

The height is the only worry I have with the SAS. I dont want to run into cert problems with it. thats why I havn't decided on how to mount the front diff yet.

What year prado are you looking at?

just the coil ones (around 91 to 94). My goal for the swap is to have it as low as possible with 33's. There was a good article in a 4wd mag awhile ago about a mu that had a solid axle put in and was running airbags with 33's, it looked almost standard

That was that red one aye?? it was only about a 2" lift, he had no body lift at all in it from memory.

A SOA is not really a drama to do, you just need to weld on a flat plate on the top for the sprins to sit on, and make sure the drive shaft is long enough. you will probably have to take out a leaf or 2. As geeves said, talk to your certifier first.

If you are worried about height, you can just use shorter coils so it sits lower. You only need a couple of inches between the bump stops to absorb normal road bumps. You lose on compression, but as your trailing arms will almost be horizontal, you should be able to get heaps of down ward travel to compensate for the lack of upwards travel.
Hope that makes sense, it does in my head anyways.

I am thinking of converting the back of my hilux to 4 or 5 link with air bags. The miss wants to get a trail bike, and as the hilux tray sits so high, i'm thinking i will be able to de-flate the air bags right down till its sitting on the bump stops to load and un-load the bike. I reckon if i was to park in a ditch i would hardy even need a ramp!!
Oh how i miss my mu, the lux is just not the same :(
