1990 Jackaroo 2.6 steering slop

Postby jeffwithjack » Sun May 29, 2016 11:31 am

My 1990 Jackaroo Rigout has a little slop in the steering, which requires constant correction to drive straight.

When you sit in the cab, stationary, and twiddle the steering wheel slightly from side to side, a slight clunk can be heard, and felt in the wheel.

I have had my wife twiddle the wheel while looking in the engine bay, and I believe there is a slop in the part of the column that is enclosed in a rubber boot, not far above the steering box. I presume this is a collapsable spline.

Is this adjustable, or do I need to replace parts?

It looks like a difficult job with the engine in place.

There is a u joint in that boot. Spline and bolt both ends of the shaft so not a major to change. Take the wheel of and go in from there. Pretty sure its a genuine part only
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
