1991 MU UCS55 rear brakes

Postby danieljnicholson » Sun Jul 03, 2016 11:34 am

1991 MU UCS55 imported to the US.
What is the part # for each rear brake caliper?
I could use help sourcing calipers or rebuild kits.
the rear pads are impossible to source here in the US.so I ordered pads of ebay from au and am looking to the future when /if I might need rear calipers since they are not interchangeable with US amigos/rodeos

Are you sure they are different to Amigos up to about 93 or troopers from 88 to 91?
I know what I would be doing if I lived there if thats the case.
I know some Amigos / USA Troopers had Dana diffs but not all. Find an Amigo being wrecked with the Isuzu diff then swap the casing over into yours with whatever brakes it has then fit your diff head into that if the ratios are different. All future problems solved. Plan B would be a conversion to the Dana diff but I dont know how much work that would be.
The disc brake handbrake on your Mu can be a pain at times and was never very good so a chance at an upgrade should be considered

its the factory isuzu rear diff, you cant buy new genuine calipers i tried, but have seen aftermarket copies on ebay, the brake pads are very common here aroung $20 for a cheap rear set

Got time to start the rear brakes again
Take a look at the right rear caliper
no wedge shaped cutouts on the piston to screw it back in.
are these press in?
do these caliper look familiar, anyone have the factory part #
any ideas?

Standard 2.8 Mu caliper. On the back of the caliper is a 12mm brass bolt. Take this out and you will find a 8mm allen key inside. This it the adjuster. A light pressure on the piston while adjusting helps but do not force it

ok I got that now. thanks.
Do these pistons screw back in? or once the allen key is backed of you push them back in? is there a manual that goes over this?

How do the rotors come off?

If its in perfect condition the allen key winds the piston back in I always used with my hand at the same time although that shouldnt be needed

Don't ever use too much force on the adjusting screw. They are a bit fragile. Here are some photos of some of the internal components that you may find useful to understand the system.

Rear rotors are held in place by the wheel nuts and one 10mm bolt in the face. They can be a tight fit so pulling forwards on on side while giving it a light tap with a mallet on the other side may be nessecsary

that is what I thought but I don't see any retaining screw on the rotor, only a very small hole as seen in the pic

that hole should have a 10mm bolt in it. Sometimes it has to be removed to fit after market wheels. It isnt needed as the wheel nuts also hold it

I'm pretty sure that mine have no extra bolts holding them on. Just the wheel/nuts.

The internal workings of the caliper are not listed as parts so suspect that you would have trouble getting them, or even the complete caliper.

on one side the bolt goes through a sleeve that is supposed to slide the other side slides on the bolt. Its not uncommon for them to sieze. Try soaking a little crc or similar into the joint overnight then use light pressure each way to loosen it. Auto shops sell a synthetic brake grease which is the best long term answer but also check the boots for splits. BNT sell the kit to replace theese seals

Digging up an old thread.

In australia, where can i find new rear calipers? I had them rebuilt the years ago, but one seized last week. On Bell st in preston... in peak morning traffic. Melbournians will understand how embarrassing that would of been.
So i want some replacements, preferably new. or at least one i can rebuild myself and make sure its done right.
thanks guys
