TF/Rodeo No 4WD

Postby 4wheel » Sun Oct 23, 2016 11:02 pm

So my Isuzu TF (Rodeo) has no 4WD, I fitted a set of manual locking hubs as I thought the auto locking hubs were at fault but after testing only the rear wheels have drive. The high and low work fine if that's relevant and there is also a occasional horrible noise coming from the vehicle when in 4. Hopefully someone will be able to give me some advice.
Thanks
Scott

A few tests to work out what is wrong.
First look at your front diff. Does it have a seconds smaller housing on the left side of the main diff. If so you have Tod or Sof and that is most likely the problem. If you have this still do the following even though some tests will fail the following and let us know for a new set of tests. For starters TOD and SOTF should not have free wheel hubs although some people fit them for a small ecconomy advantage. Also if a locker has been fitted you need to fit free wheel hubs
1 Car in neutral and 2wd Free wheel hubs unlocked
Get under car and turn one cv joint by hand Watch the other cv. It should turn probably in the oposite direction. If it doesnt see if the drive shaft is turning. If it is put the car in 4wd and in gear and repeat.
Repeat from other side
This test is for the spider gears and as long as you can make each cv turn from the other side it is a pass.
2 out of gear and 2wd
Lock one free wheel and turn the oposite cv. Driveshaft should turn. Repeat for the other side The oposite cv should not turn
3 Put car in gear and 4wd one hub locked
You should not be able to turn the oposite cv. Repeat on other side
If all these pass you are probably looking at a gearbox problem
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Had it on the ramp and done a few checks, looks like a gearbox problem so that's coming back out sometime this week and I'm sending it to a fella who thinks it's something to do with the synchro on the mechanism and some kind of coil? But shouldn't be anything too serious (fingers crossed) thanks for your help, il let you know how I get on.

UPDATE:

So I've got the gearbox back from the specialist, he said that everything is functioning properly and the box is in good condition. I put the box back in and still no 4wd, although I took it out a week ago and it worked all day! But now it won't engage again. I've spoken to my mechanic, he's has been looking and asking for me but no one seems to know where the problem lies. If anyone has any idea I would be interested to hear as it's beguining to test my patience.

Redo the tests in my first post. Report back every result.
My money will be one of the free wheels isnt engaging properly but could also be diff
