Its either the brand you use or the way you drive or who ever is telling you they need replacing is also selling the new ones.
What brand are you useing (so we can avoid)
Do you get any other breakages

Actually all the good books recommend replacing the shocks every 40000km so your experience isnt far from recommendation. However the original shocks in my bighorn were replaced at 150000km and the new ones are fine with another 50k on them . A lot of isuzus in the wreckers with far higher mileages are still on original shocks

total failure in dampening end up like no shockers at all at the present dampening would not pass road worthy inspection bounce the front and it will bounce another four to five times before settling had one rear with seal failure

I've recently put some Rancho RS5000 series shocks on the back on my MU.

I'm happy with their performance on and off-road, and the price too.
I have only the factory shocks to compare to though.

Many have had good experience with Ranchos.
There's the 5000 series, which is non-adjustable, and the 9000 series which has the adjustment knob on it, but also costs an extra $100 each.

Catalog is available from the Rancho website, it has many listings, and all dimensions etc.

Cheers,
Andy

They are all good brands. Would love to know why they are dyeing so quickly.
If your gravel roads are rough then you could be hammering them to bits and slowing down a little might help. If the dust is exceptionally abrasive then it could be wearing the shafts. Shocks with flexi boots might help.
I had a look on google for your location The last 2 websites might be the reason as well

I've had a good run out of my older style Rancho 9000's (5-position adjustable,) fitted to my 92 Mu (UCS55). I have done about 150,000 k's with them fitted (all four). They are starting to show their age now though.
I have also fitted the newer style Ranco 9000's (9-position adjustable) to the front of my 94 Mu (UCS69) but haven't done many k's on them. When I bought it it had a set of Nitro Max Shocks (made in Australia, I think) fitted to the rears and I have replaced these with a newer set of the same as I would have had to wait 3 months to get the Ranchos I'd wanted. I did notice on the box that they came in that they have a 2 year/150,000k warranty.
On both Mu's I was quite surprised at how good the original shocks still were when removed (both under 150,000ks).

I put a set of Pedders Sport Ryders on the front of my old 94 model Rodeo when it had about 130,000 on the clock, and they were still working just fine when I sold it with 245,000 ks up, so they might be worth a look at for yours

Once you get the new shocks take it for a run down one of your usual roads and see how hot they get. If they do get very hot you might need to look at shocks with a remote reservoir as these cool better. Unfortunately they are not very cheap (500+ each)
