C223 and 4JB1T gearboxes, the same ?

Postby BalkaRoo » Sun Feb 21, 2010 6:21 pm

I have an old 87 Jackaroo with a C223T motor that I got off a friend and just wondering if the gearbox is the same as my 88 4JB1T. I have kept it for spare parts, it's too rusty to repare but I arn't shure exactly what is usefull to me, the diffs look like they are the same but without pulling it out I don't know if the gearbox will fit or not. Its the 5 speed box, I think they call it an "MUA" transmission and has the 4WD lever in the same place as the 88.

The airconditioner looks like it will fit, thats going in soon. ;)

If its the MUA you might be ok but not sure if the bellhousing is the same
Diffs should be different but if you have rear drums they should interchange ok.
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Geeves,
If the bell housings have a different bolt pattern or some other reason why it wouldn't fit do you know if it would be possible to change the bell housing and case onto the older trans ? and do the C223 and 4JB1s have the same splines in the clutch so the first motion shaft would have a chance of fitting ?

My trans in the 88 is fine at the moment but if it will fit I don't mind keeping it for a spare but if it won't fit I will most likely pass it on to someone who can use it.

Thanks ,
Graham

Thanks for replying, it looks like trial and error, some time I will get it out of the 87 and if I ever have the gearbox out of the 88 I will find out.
