Difflock not activating.

Postby adhesh » Mon Mar 08, 2010 9:51 pm

Hi All

I have just joined your club!!!

I am now the proud owner of an Isuzu 240 lE double cab van---2005 model.
I am pleased with everything in the van but realised that the difflock is not engaging when the button is activated .

This south african model has a pushbutton on the dash with an amber illumination and a green "Difflock" illumination in the dash which comes on after the diaphragm moves and the difflock engages.(I am not sure if the overseas models are the same). My problem is that after pushing the button , nothing happens . I am getting 12 Volts dc to the solenoid but there seems to be no suction coming from the intake manifold.Does any body have any ideas why this is happening?

Please help!!!

Is it diesel or petrol?
On diesels the vacuum comes from a vacuum pump on the back of the alternator.

check the pipeing to the manifold. You might need to borrow a guage to check the vacume but if it was faulty it would also make the brakes bad.
Is it possible that the lock is working but the bulb is blown?

Hi Guys, thanks for responding!

The vehicle is a petrol version .

The Difflock light does illuminate on the dash when the ignition is turned on , the bulb is functioning. The brakes also seem to be fine.

I have sent the vehicle back to the dealer I purchased it from (still within a one month warrantee period) , it has spent most of the day there and their mechanic says that there is a signal problem from the front to the rear of the vehicle. I tend not to believe this as the system is pneumatic and the signal back from the difflock is merely an indication that it has activated. The difflock is definetly not activating.I have left the vehicle there overnight and I am hoping they can fix it today!!!

Thanks guys

Thanks geeves , the vacuum does come from the intake manifold , so you are on the right track. The vehicle has been booked in at a diff specialist tomorrow & I'm sure they will find the problem.
I will keep you posted.

Thanks again!

Next issue to sort out is the ridiculous fuel consumption on the 2,4 petrol engine.

Thinking of installing a Dastek chip and removing the catalytic converter .
Any other suggestions are welcome!!!

hi Adesh
fuel on the isuzu? the weight u are moving is the same no matter what engine. to keep value the engine swap is not a good idea. The chip thing works. Steves Auto Clinic. Contact them they are in JHB. Maus conversions is in Pretoria. Bit of cam, intake mods and exhaust mods with a chip makes a huge difference. The point is to keep your driving style. if you now go faster enjoying the power...you will use more fuel. A trip to the Okavango with a 3.2 v6 Isuzu, 2.4 Nissan, 2.5 diesel Mazda..... we all had trailers and we were traveling arround 140, we all use approx the same fuel... 7-8l per 100km the old scientific thing - energy required to move the weight arround you will pay for it at the fuel bill.. only some small efficiency differences - wind resistance, petrol to diesel, turbo and non turbo...... this is quite a heavy Bakkie what is your consumption at what speed and at what load. You are close to sea level you should do better than us at the highveld. enjoy the pick-up - where is the pics man?

Hi there Frontier 1999

Sorry for the late response.

If you getting 7-8l per 100 kms doing 140 kms/h, that is excellent!!! Most stats on the 2.4L Isuzu petrol say your consumption is around 13L per 100kms which works out at about 7kms/litre. At present I get about 7.2kms/ L on highway runs & 6.2 kms/L in city runs.
This takes some getting used to as my previous run around was a Toyota Run X 1.4L .

I have no plans of changing the engine. I did make enquiries about replacing the Chip with a Dastek one at a cost of R3000 which can be done in PMB.

I have also been advised to remove the Catalytic Converter as this will also improve the consumption. I will keep you posted as to what I have done & what the results are!!!

Later dudes!!!

Reality is that those figures are what I would expect in that wagon. 8l/100km in any large petrol 4wd is only going to happen downhill and tail wind and not 140kph.
My diesel bighorn can be coaxed to 8.3 but this requires careful driving.
My 1600 Toyota Carib only gets 7.6 if I try to drive frugally.

Hi Gents
My first trip with the 3.1 turbo diesel juiced 8.5km/l with 4 adults, tools in the back and some piping on the roof carrier... not bad i would think still running in so we did not exceed 120km/h. You have to remember that this is not a little Run X. So you are not doing bad. We have to keep in mind that the Bighorn is a bit heavier than our bakkies. an our models is a lot later in manufacture. Aerodynamics and tech has changed a bit.
The 'Chip' and a free flow exhaust will change it for sure. Settle and drive the thing, you bought yourselves a good reliable truck. Most of the other guys telling you about their fuel economy of 10 and 12km/l need new calculators anyway. Only 2.8 Isuzu owners can bragg with that....

I enjoy this vehicle too much to let the fuel economy get me down-My family loves it as well with lots more leg room & comfort as compared to my old Nissan 3 L V6 Sani double cab which I sold last year.
I will get a small economical runabout soon!

My rotary on the other hand with my old engine/turbo setup, same megasquirt 2.2v ecu and 2 1000cc 2 1680cc injectors running 9 psi through 2 holley blue fuel pumps half inch lines, i could swear it could eat 10 litres in less than a km floored

All I know about this is that this is vacuum operated but how it works and what controls it I dont know. Start at the diff checking the vacuum and electrical connections with a multi meter and let us know how you get on. I would love one of these diff locks but they never came here
