mullet's 89 bighorn 2.8ITD manual LWB

Postby gomulletgo » Thu Jul 08, 2010 11:03 am

Hey everyone, this is my 89 bighorn 2.8ITD LWB. It took me a long time to find one that was in ok condition, probably looked at about 12, travelled from one end of the south island to the other looking for one. Finally got one and I'm very happy with it so far :D

The plan for this vehicle is a comfortable daily driver / tourer / mild offroader (this may change if the bug bites)

Everything is stock at the moment but I hope to change that. I'll update the below list as I do.

Modifications and Accessories:

Suspension: STOCK
Body Lift: NONE
Tyres/Wheels: rude alloy 16s
Traction Aids: open front and rear (just got a rear lsd that needs the gears changed)
Bullbar: STOCK
Spot lights and Lighting: STOCK SPOTS REMOVED
Communications/GPS: handheld radio and gps when needed
Dual Batteries: NO
Engine: STOCK
Exhaust: 2inch (stock?)
Sound system: CD/MP3 aux input
External: STOCK
Internal: EGT and boost guages
Others: NONE

EGR (exhaust gas recycling?) removal.

So I can't put a snorkel on until there is some room on the inner gaurd to put a hole for the snorkel through, and I can't see a way to get some room until one of the green circled items moves away from that gaurd. What I'm thinking is that if I can get rid of as much EGR as possible I will be able to move the power steering res to where a pile of EGR currently is (red crossed circle) that will give me access to that inner gaurd.

The engine bay picture with the red spray shows about how the factory intake goes as far as I could tell just looking at it.

So I got a LSD off Gavin, while I was there he said that all of the EGR stuff can be removed and all I have to do is put a pipe between the intercooler (next photo red circle) and a little diaphrapm looking thing on the top of the fuel pump (red circle on the next photo)

Can anyone else confirm or deny this? Any thing else need addressing? I assume all other pipes get plugged and removed? I just don't want to pull it all off just to have my engine run poorly or worse BOOM!

Thanks guys :D

Fuse box back and away from the guard. Need to make mounts but the wires reach
Power steer res into the gap
New hose through that gap straight into a new hole in the airbox. Weld up the old hole and the drains in the bottom of the airbox.
If you get keen remove all the redundant pipework
easy Almost
snorkleinside.jpg

dont touch the aircon pipe. If you do there will be a hissing noise. Your hands will freeze and the aircon wont work no more

For a moment I thought you were talking about mine but then remembered you can only see the clean part.
It does look really good. Possibly better than mine was 14 years ago.
If the engine has been looked after as well as the body expect to own it a very long time

Thanks geeves. I still want to remove as much EGR gear as I can though. Can anyone answer my question on which pipes stay and which go? Or am I asking in the wrong section? Maybe there should be a full walk through of what EGR stuff goes in the FAQ section.

As far as I know you can remove the vacum pipes back to the tee on the drivers side guard. I am waiting for bonkers to get back about the blockoff plates etc and then I will remove mine

that scoop is only on the 89 to 91 trooper/bighorn with the intercooled 2.8 diesel engine
These are quite rare in USA

Yeah, I guess I was wondering if they were sold separately. I guess I need to find a yard in Oz or NZ selling one then, eh?

Thanks- Bart

Pretty much. There are a few aftermarket scoops that are similar but not as well made. Could be worth looking in a few boy racer shops

Thanks Captcol, Although I'm not really following you. Could you ad pics maybe? And maybe explain it to me in more detail? Cheers wbski007. It's not as nice in the flesh as it looks in that pic. But it's not bad either. You seem to be quite into this stuff, are you able to direct me on the EGR stuff that I can remove safely?

Re EGR You will see in my pic that its all gone. The 2 valves on the inlet are replaced by a blanking plate. (not as nice as the ones in other posts) and the pipe that goes to the other side cut crimped and welded. This was done by the place that imported and sold it to me. I would of used a blanking plate on the exhaust as well

Thanks geeves, I follow all the blanking off of intake and exhaust. It's the little vaccum lines that run everywhere that I don't know what exactly they all do and which ones go and which ones have to stay. In your pic to the top right of the diesel hand primer pump there is a little round white plastic do-dacky that is attached to the vaccum lines, do you know it's purpose?

Its a solinoid that is controlled by the egr computer thats hidden under the center console. Just removing the lines between this and the egr valves is enough but ideally you want to remove and block the line back to the vacuum pump as well. Mines still there because Im lazy

I have an EGT guage and a mechanical boost guage that I hope to install shortly. Hopefully someone can help me, I temporarily connected the boost guage too the intercooler at the location of the pipe 3rd pic from the top. I also tried at the "T" juncture near the fuel pump but I couldn't get any boost readings, I even gave the engine a rev. I know the guage works as I blew on and sucked on the pipe so it definitely measures pressure just fine. What am I missing?

My Mu (4JB1) makes boost without load.. will go up to 10-11PSI in neutral if I rev it. Max boost for the Mu is 12PSI.
