Hey mate, nice looking truck,
you said that you fitted a shimmed lsd rear diff and this was a while ago now. How has it been performing with the silverstones?
Looking at getting an auto locka but the price of a 2nd hand lsd is looking more atractive.

Its not to easy keeping up with Safaris fitted with 35" simexs when you have open diffs

Yeah I paid $50 for the LSD bits and something like $150 for a pro to fit them to the diff head and shim it up. It works really well. A locker would be really useful in the front though. I have only used the silverstones on two trips and it never fails to amaze me how well the truck goes with them on, other people are surprised too :D

Reminds me, I should probably change the oil in it as it is coming up 2 years of use, cant remember what LSD oil the guy recommended - may have been redline? Anyone recommend a good LSD oil?

They are amazing tyres just be careful with your 33 i run them on my truck, only on club runs and bush trips, on 3 set of new rear wheelbearing in 2 years, just rebuilding rear diff now, and They arnt blowing due to water, it smashes the outer race of the bearing

Re: Lewis's 87 Bighorn - RIP

Postby lewis » Wed Sep 19, 2012 12:45 pm

I had the shittest weekend ever. The truck was going so well on the way to the snow, pulling 120kph 5th gear up hills and all, seemed too good to be true and it turns out it was.
We got to Turangi to go to the hot pools after a day of snowboarding and as I was filling up the truck my mate noticed diesel pissing out from under the engine bay. I knew then that the replacement of the worn out glow plugs had just masked the real hard starting problem - the injector pump seal was totally shot. I drove as far as I could and ended up at national park with the tank on E ($100 diesel in 50km) and it was misfiring and boosting 25psi and the exhaust temp was shooting to 700 which it never had done before.
Lucklily no one from Wellington had come with me. My mates from Auckland who were on the trip gave me a lift back on the Sunday. Monday morning I hired a trailer rated at 1200kg (haha) and hooked it up behind my girlfriends dads 1990 Nissan Patrol 4.2L petrol gas guzzler, and picked up the truck and took it back to Auckland, ripped the bullbars, winch, gauges and anything else easy off it. Tuesday morning sold it to the wreckers for $800 and drove the patrol back to Wellington.
I have made no profit from selling it cause i spent $600 on petrol for the patrol over the last two days and $100 on trailer hire, and I still have to get the patrol back to Auckland in October.
Unfortunately fixing it wasnt really an option as an injector pump rebuild is too expensive, and my spare pump was in Wellington. Also dumping more money into a truck that doesnt really get legit WOFs didnt seem the smartest idea as my girlfriend kept reminding me. Had it broken in Wellington I would have got the pump swapped.
Gutted that the truck is gone cause it was such a good all rounder - economical, big but not too big, and decent on and offroad. It will be missed.

I will upload some pics of the bullbars front (winch bar with mounts to suit body lift or not) and rear with tow bar and tow hook, and the 4" stainless steel snorkel + enclosed k&n air filter if anyone is interested in purchasing them - pick up from Auckland.

Not sure what I am going to get for the next truck, all i know is i dont have the time to build one up myself....

Its a pity you didnt think sooner. If you had left the wagon at Nat park and got a rental to get everyone home we could of picked it up this weekend. I would of helped you get it back. Unfortuanatly the current outcome though might of been for the best. The body was very tired and with close on 400k it wasnt long for this world.
I could sell you a nice Wizard for 4k Same as I bought it for a year ago. You have to find me a manual version though. (find me a good 3.1 manual at a good price and I will discount that price)

I can find manual wizards with 4jx1 motors. I want a manual less than I want that engine.

Thanks for the offer but I need to get it back together next weekend as I doing the Akatio trip the following weekend and as Ive been picked for jury duty the week after labour weekend I might not have any time during the week to do anything.

ps anyone got any ideas how to get a challenge from the lawyer. Ive already been told its a 9 day trial. Come up with a foolproof idea and both the boss and myself will thank you forever. Might even through in a set of isuzu manuals
