Karism`s Mu Cleanup and Maintenance project.

Postby karism » Fri Feb 11, 2011 2:46 am

Hallo!

As you know i recently bought my Mu. Wow what a lovely vehicle!

I decided that its needs cleaning up,and fixing of a few small things :

The turbo was boosting way to much. I tested the turbo actuator ,and it needed replacement. I took a universal actuator that I had,and made the waste gate adjustable, that I could set the boost to the correct amount. Its running at 0.7 bar ( 10 PSI) now.

The valves needed adjustment. Some of the clearances were more than 0.65mm !

The exhaust gasket needed replacing, and the down pipe needed to be sealed. < This was a major job for me,as I don`t have small hands...> After 3 days of working, and many hours and swearing,i got it done. Its not a difficult job,I just need smaller hands..hahaha!

I needed to put in an air filter,as I had none. ( I was not happy when I saw this..)

Some small water hoses needed replacement, and various little bolts and pipes.

The EGR valves were removed ,and I feel allot more happy with the less cluttered engine bay!

Enough talk all ready show us some pictures you moron!!

Engine afterwards :

Still needs a proper pressure wash, but we will get there!

I`am running a K&N for a filter in the interim until I can find the correct Donaldson type.

Nothing wrong with k&n filters. They work better than the Donaldson
Not happy about the red stain on the intake pipe. It could be local dust but looks like rusty water stain which would indicate overheating. The 3.1 is known to crack heads.
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

Engine has not been using water at all. Its the local dust that is red here .We have what they call "rooi grond is vrugbaar, maar kom ooral in " In the native language. It means red ground is very good for growing crops, but is gets in everywhere"

Update!

So the Mu got an full service last week. I added some engine Desludge to the oil,and drove it for 160 km.
Drained the oil and added a new oil filter and diesel filter.

My,my the oiled looked horrible, there were particles in it up to 5mm! ( Not metal particles, but sludge that came out! I squished it between my fingers to make sure it was not metal)

Oil pressure is now a healthy 7 bar at idle when the engine is cold, and it settles down to around 2 bar when it is warm.

The engine sounds happier now with fresh oil ,and filters.
