Postby 4x4SWANNY » Thu May 05, 2011 10:53 am

Hi all...Ok so alt blew as usual......So fitted a second hand one from a older model...The wiring rig was a little different but dash lights go out and volts sit where they should... But alternator getting really hot.. Do i have the wiring wrong or is it a bad earth...Alt was from a 2.3 diesel ubs 55 body put it in my ubs 69 3.1.
Oh and just a note i run this alternater from a mounting i made up the top and drive it from the second outer aircon/ powersteering belt ..original alt runs below for the breaks..
Is just the shell thou dosent make power....Thanks all Any ideas ?
Oh well, can some one hook up the winch i cant open my door !!!!!!!!!

And just to add to opening statement (alt blew as usual) means voltage went up too high was 3hrs from home so had to keep going...Then 2hrs later volts dropped out completely ran on Battery to get home..

Hey, i noticed in your vehicle info (just to the right) that u have said "Top mount 2nd alt above A/C pump", is that to say that u have 2 alternators & the A/C pump installed & all running?
If so, do u have a photo of the setup (cos i thought it would be rather a tight fit & lack of mounting bolts/position for an alternator above the A/C pump).
Cheers.
bighorn = fun
If you see a bighorn, and the exhaust smells of BBQ or fish & chips, it's probably me

Hi guys...Will have to figure out how to upload some pics of my second alt..I still have the a/c running the a/c and yes a 2nd alt above the a/c unit. I dont spend that much time airing tyres up and down so at this stage the portable compressor does the job ok...
I had to modify the turbo intake and make a couple of brackets to bolt the alt on...

still have the a/c working as a a/c ..Idont think there would be enough room to put another a/c unit in where i have the second alt.. From pulley to the intercooler would be to close.

Above veiw of 2nd alt.. between the oil filler cap and intercooler the rough line you see is where i plastic welded the air intake pipe to fit the alt mod.

The orange wire is for the 2nd battery.
The black tape around the double looking wire is the earth wire from motor to chassis and battery.
I used another flex bit from another 3.1 air cleaner to join air in take up.

side view . Took off vacum pump and cut off shaft flush with housing.
Hated having to cut up a good rotor shaft...
From turbo to join is the from a ubs 55 but could use another ubs69 didnt like cutting one of those up either.
Lol the sacrifises we make ........
