That's good to hear the oil leak is fixed Ben must have been a mongrel of drive back home with out the air con working in 39 deg heat up there this time of the year.
When I had the problem with the air con fan not working I pulled the fan out and run wires from the battery + and - and it worked so I removed the glove box lid and removed the resistor it was blown so a drop of solder on each terminal fixed it Holden spares wanted $180 for a new 1 no thanks mine has worked for the last 5 years with no problems I would check that out for the fan not working.

had to speedy sleeve the Cam seal,

wasnt this a rebuilt motor?
Speedy sleeve on a cam works to give the seal a new face to run on but the real cause is a groove worn in the cam or the wrong seal used. If the seal surface of the cam is worn then the lobes probably are as well. Cams are not expensive and they had to take it out to fit the sleeve

dont think the cam was removed to fit the speedy sleeve for front seal.
The mechanic topped up the engine oil to the top dot 1.5 litres.. So it was stil blowin some smoke on the way home.

Not 100% sure if they replaced the cam during the rebuild.
Never seen one for sale new. Guessing they would be a custom grind maybe.

It scares me to think how much ive spent on it this year, considering the old motor 300thou+ was still chugin away ok before we choose to re build one rather then buy a new car....
And we still had to buy a new car. Lol

the big kick in the teeth is i finally got it back & the rego runs out next week.

I'm getting there with the wizard bit by bit if the new glow plugs and injectors don't fix the rough start up might be retentioning the head bolts if I can find a socket to fit those star shaped head bolts.
If I remember you said you took the head off to get TDC on no 1 piston might have to get a gasket as well from kiwi cylinder heads.

Stardog do not use the kiwi cylinder head gaskets. They are known for premature failure, plenty have failed in the first few hundred km, especially the diesel ones

dont think the new head has been taken off since rebuild steve, the head on the old motor was taken off to look at the injector washer/ heat shiel arangement
as the new head didnt have the injector heatshields from memory.

Ben my mistake it was the old engine you took the head off so that eliminates that as a problem.
I was under the hood this morning looking at the fuel pump with a work light I think it might be a bit to retarded in the timing if I can get at the 3 nuts with out to much drama im going to advance it a little bit there is a bit of a nock when its running.
If that's the problem and it fixes it I will be wrapped freezing out side i will wait for it to warm up a bit in the sun before I do anything.

the injectors were rebuilt by MTQ (darwin), following your phone call earlier this week about the position the injector was installed (180 out?)...
I wonder if it has damaged it (tip, heatshield).
If the new (chinese) turbo was rooted, would that it smoke at idle? or just on boost?

I don't know about the injectors could of been the turbo is good I didn't do the 2 bolts on the oil return pipe up tight enough DOH' I moved the pump outwards a bit run like a bucket of bolts.
Turned the pump in ran a bit better and bit of white smoke turned it in a fraction more and adjusted the fuel delivery screw a few times adjusted the idle screw no more smoke and is idling a lot better and no smoke when I rev her out.
Have to get a boost gauge on it now see what's it boosting hopefully this might of fixed it fingers crossed.
