Quote "WTF is with the funny spline things on the bolts holding the spare tyre carrier?"

It's just a 12 point drive hex fastener isn't it?

It's splines. Not hex, and I think 6

They are a special bolt head designed to stop people just unbolting the wheel carrier and walking off with the spear wheel.

At $200 plus for a new tyre you need to at least try and stop the scumbags from stealing your wheel.

Hell if the crims will slide under your car/truck now and cut the fuel line to drain your tank they will try and steal anything they can now days

designed to stop people
rephrase this as slow down. If the carrier was welded to the door they would just turn up with a battery powered grinder. If they want your wheel they will get it

Some cars are never touched. Many years ago I had a Hilman Avenger. Away tramping for the weekend with it parked in a spot well known for break ins all weekend. Got back to it and all was still there including the wifes purse and credit cards. It was her window that was down and it did rain that weekend so a fitting punishment on the way home

Wet arse makes em moan more

Changed the fuel filter yesterday. Then last night in town it died 4 times on me. So this morning I went back to work, dug around in the bin and found the oring that should have been on the bottom sediment trap thingy but was instead still stuck to the old filter
Handbrakes are annoying on these things. I adjusted mine until the lever felt great and moved what I thought would be a nice amount. After a short drive I adjusted it 3/4 of the way to where it had been to get rid of the sluggish response and funny smell from the rear
And a head scratcher for me was the front diff drain. Was sure I had the right bolt.... Look closer, great it's been out before and masses of goo used to seal it. Excess silicone blocking the drain hole

Next annoying issue I have is to figure out how to fix the broken L/H dash mount. It rattles like (EDIT) crazy and drive me nuts :x
Also going to get my oil gauge tested. It reads very low but the light never flicks on. Went for a 150k drive today so got it as hot as it will get and at idle gauge barely registers. Shows about 24-28 psi at 2000 rpm.

But, at least the drive went well. Picking up new ball joints tomorrow so will put new springs in and tweak the front bars to get it all sitting right and take it for a wheel alignment as that is definitely way out

Oh and the fuel gauge! found a thread on here saying they hold about 80l but gauge will drop to half after 200ish.
I'd been driving around putting fuel in when the gauge got to empty, wondered why the fuel light never came on. Filled it to full the first time Friday. took 50 litres so still had 30l in the tank!

Oh has anyone had a steering box apart? I'm sure mine has too much play in it. WOF guys didn't say a thing but I can wobble the steering wheel a fair amount with no movement of the pitman arm.
Never seen inside a box before but I can only think that's wear between the worm drive and sector gear?

Never trust a MU fuel gauge or fuel light.

That's today's lesson folks

That an MUs can have 2 different radiators. Same year, same engine. Different rads!

Yeah lol. Lucky I only just got out the gate from work and wasn't stranded any where.

Yeah, mine and one at the wreckers had one type, another at the wreckers was different. Both at the wreckers were manual 2.8s.
Radiator catalogue also shows to

Started on putting the raised springs in today. Forgot to take a before measurement  But I did take a pic
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-zbLK0EoZ-rs/UjU57ARIQHI/AAAAAAAAA0A/aF-rbVZ51yE/w1538-h865-no/20130915_110041.jpg

Son of a bitch some of those bolts were tight! Soaked everything in break away and ran wire brush over threads etc. But still got a damn good work out
I need air tools!

Had to call a halt to proceedings when I discovered spring makers seems to have sent me U bolts for lowering blocks  They are far too long and the thread doesn't go far enough so can't even use them by cutting as I don't have a thread die over 12mm
So it's parked in the shed until next weekend.

here's a pic of the new vs old springs

Bellamy and East from Chch. We deal with them through work so they did me a sharp price. Can't recall what it was but pretty sure sub $400
Yeah original's would fit, but they need replacing. Threads all rusted and shagged.

Oh also found why I thought it handled a little odd at times, and it sits a little lower on the right. R/H shackle is jammed on the upper. Even smacking it with a hammer wouldn't budge it at first

So any Ideas as how to get these off?
I have a bit of rust developing under the carrier and want to clean this up but need to remove the carrier first.
