black 91 mu

Postby nut161 » Mon Jan 06, 2014 8:07 pm

Bought as my first 4wd after many years messin with fast turbo petroll isuzus. Had an injector pump leak which i thought id fix, 2nd pump and it was running again. Stock as far as i know atm, blanked the egr off today, replaced the belts and general servicing so far. Runs ok but pump timing/fuel way off, sluggish as hell down low and hittin hills but it runs atm so im happy for the moment.

Mods so far;
Snorkel
Removed steps
Removed so called bull bar
Egr blank
Replaced injection pump
Replaced belts
Removed "excess" air filter housings...

Plans basically to make it camping/trail/fishing rig, so just need to raise it a bit and some tyres. Not really into hardcore 4wd just getting it places for fun.

Fitted some new narva arctic h4s and scored a set of 31" bfg muds from a mate today for $300, was wanting to go all terrains but these where cheap and i need new tyres.
Also retarded the pump timing slightly and up the fuel one turn, drives like a new car, regained all the lost torque since refitting the pump

Muddies fell through but now have an arb winch bar, 2.5" exhaust, wound up torsion bars and efs rear lift. Dues to old saggy leaves gained 90mm over all and feels much nicer to drive. Just need some new tyres, shocks and weld up a rack.

Yeah mate.
Go for 33 straight away. I'm running 32 bfg and 33 would be better.
I'm from brissy aswel mate. Should hit some tracks up!

Well added some cheap 31 muddies and got into some kinda serious 4bying. Found the limits of the current setup and after today the list has grown to make it more capable.
Fun bogged/bottomed out pic from today

soa completed using stock hilux leaf over brackets and shackles, custom traction rod or ladder bar for wheel tramp, 40mm diff drops and the 2nd leaf from the top removed to level out the truck. So in essence no more getting hung up on the leaves, just need to install the rear lokka for current mods. Still need to fab up some sliders and buy a front lokka

installed the rear lokka yesterday (very straight forward process) and took it on a little shakeout run near home last night. The recent mods so far have increased its ability dramatically traction rod worked perfectly and having the leaves on top prevented hangups. Rear lokka feels nice to drive and cant wait to order/install my front.

well mu was running well till yesterday, on my way home from glasshouse my radiator decided not to hold water resulting in a dead motor. was no indication on the gauge, first time thought something was up was 30 seconds before the engine stopped when it felt like it had less power...
So now need to rebuild the motor, anyone have any tips for rebuilding the 4jb1t? first rebuild of a diesel but built many petrols
cheers for any advice on my poor dead mu atm

If its been cooked it might not be worth rebuilding? How did it die? Did it sieze or blow a head or crack a bore.
You might be lucky by taking the head off getting it crack tested and new gasket but check the bores and rings at the same time. If it siezed get a new engine. Holden v6 engines go well
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

havent investigated fully, cranks with zero compression or ignition. could be just a headgasket but i would expect alot more as it was already tired with alot of blowby

also if you decide you want to sell the mu let me know.

Do you have more pictures of the spring over axle lift? How did you remount shocks and where did you mount the traction rod? Mine has one in the works currently and just working through the legalities of it with a 2 inch body lift for a cert. Cheers

I do have some pics but im working away atm so unable to load them until probably feb. I used the shackles and shock mounts from a hilux that has factory soa, then you need to cut and flip the leaf mounts ensuring you keep your pinion angle right. Traction rod was mounted on the drivers side of the diff with some plate welded to the diff, a mount on the body, triangulated chromoly traction rod with heim joints and a shackle with bushed joint at the body. Was a copy/bastardised version of what I could find on the net.
