Replacing Glass Hatch With Ute Lid

Postby NZxMU » Mon Sep 24, 2012 7:53 pm

Hey, I have a 1993 MU 2.8TD

I'm wanting to know if the glass hatch rear can be removed and replaced with the ute lid found on some MU's?

Like this one http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =514949229

Is the glass hatch bolted down and simple to remove?

Will I need to drill holes in the roof to attach the ute lid hinges to the roof?

Sorry if this has been covered before I am new to forums and have spent hours searching.

Cheers :D

it has come up before. The mu body is one piece. A hacksaw is needed to take the roof off. Expect the wof man to send you to the certifiers as well
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

The back part is spot welded on if done correctly no one will know the difference, why take the back off though you are going to loose space??

Space doesn't really matter to me, the back seats stay folded up. It was more the fact that it could be removed easily for spotlighting or going out on a hot summers day that made me think it would suit me better. Would I be correct in thinking it would be legal to have the back removed on the road? As it is fiberglass like the roofs on the early surfs that I've seen with roof removed and rear passengers. Thanks for the replies, and please point me in the right direction if this has been covered already..

I'd like to do it one day too! They look cool and you would lose all that weight of the glass and steel. 8-)
