rust, bog, paint - need advice

Postby MooMooMoo » Tue May 28, 2013 9:08 am

Hi guys,

considering i bought my MU for $2,500 i think shes in great nick apart from the body... the previous owner neglected it and left it outside weathered for over 3 years without a cover or anything. .

so now it has the dredded paint peel, surface rust on the rear part of the roof and bad rust on another section of the roof where the rust has caused a 5c size hole which i have duct taped. The seels around the rear windows are also rusted and letting in some water.

now i need some advice or maybe some direction. i have a max of $1,000 to repair all of this and make the car somewhat presentable but my main concern is to try get the car in good enough shape to stop the rusting process so i can keep the car for atleast another 5 years or more.

What would you guys recomend.. do i get the rust repaired by a professional and then pain the car myself?

are there any back yard panel beaters in sydney that will do a decent job for $1,000?

Daisy will be the best to answer this as he is a panel beater but the catch is how bad is the rust and how good are your painting skills.
1000 does pay for a fair bit of welding but its mainly labour
If your idea of painting is either a 4 inch brush or spray cans leave it to the experts. If you have painted cars before and been happy with the result why not do it yourself.

This is the biggest piece which is on the roof.

i dont have a pic of the rear window seals as its not that noticeable but it lets water in.

The rear side windows are basically glued in. I had a broken one, went and got a second hand window, guy came along and slapped some black goo (urethane?) around it and stuck it back in. Same stuff as what they stick front windscreens in with these days, I think.

Your leak may be coming from some part of the steel bodywork that supports all this though.

Take the interior panels out and look at it from the inside. Mine had a wee spot on the outside, and quite a bit more inside. So pull them off and have a look in there, seems they rust from the inside out. Also they need to be removed anyway for any welding etc.
