98 is that coil spring rear and either a 3l diesel or 3.2 v6?
If its that model they did come as a convertable so it should be possible to unbolt the roof without too much drama. 2 things though. A lot of cars that had a convertable option also had extra body strengthening to compensate. As the roof is fibreglass this shouldnt be an issue but I dont no the law on this. It could easily be a cert required mod
If its the earlier Mu the roof is steel and permanantly attached An angle grinder will remove it but dont expect to get a wof afterwards
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
