91 Isuzu Mu 2.8D – Blown turbo

Postby ricardohardo » Sun Aug 02, 2009 10:43 am

Hi People,

Last week I was driving on the open road...A whining sound, similar to that of a dying dog was coming from my bonnet; on top of that, smoke such as a pine forest fire was erupting from my exhaust.

Managed to coast the vehicle to a mechanic 20ks away, Diagnosis: Turbo Terminal, dead, kaput, f*&ked.

So I’m after a replacement turbo, any suggestions? What’s the most reliable turbo that will fit the 91 2.8D?

I’m a newbie and have decided to fit the turbo myself, any suggestions, tips, advice doing this job?

Thanks
Rich

(p.s. happy to post a debrief if people want)

I think your best bet would be to goto the pick-a-part in auckland and get a turbo off a 2.8td this way its a bolt off-bolt on affair!. Just give it a quick check before you pull it out.
Cheers,
Andrew

If your lucky you will have a reparable turbo. Not sure when they changed to the non repairable type. A repair though is about 3 times what pick a part charge and the same as your 2 isuzu specialist wreckers

Best way to access the turbo to manifold bolts (4) and oil return bolts (2) is through the wheel arch with rubber cover removed.

G'day Demonic, Geeves & dasnoboarder,

thanks for the advice,

f*&K what a mission its been, my mu has been up on the jack for 4 weeks, I've been having stabs at removing my turbo....f&*kin frustrating

I took dasnoboarder's advice an removed the rubber wheel cover arch but I've been faced with the following issues:

1) I couldn't reach the exhaust manifold/turbo flange bolts (4), not enough room to undo the nuts, so I've attempted to remove the exhaust outlet (piece) to gain access

2) Exhaust outlet bolts are as tight as a nuns c%#t, i cant break the seal they are old, heat tempered and corroded as hell!! I've tried heat (poksey little blow torch) & a nut splitter, (f*&ked the nut)....

Am i better off taking the whole f&*ken engine out? (I'm thinking a can get leverage & access) :?:

can any one shed any light on my delima, it seems you cant get to the turbo flange/exhaust manifold bolts without removing the exhaust outlet??? :(

cheers

Hay mate I did it the 1st time just diving in and ripping anything in the way out by using a lot of CRC! Yeah the best way I found was take the hole thing off and then replace turbo and put it back in! There are some tight bolts on the under side of it! But I just lay on the engine and turned it 1/4 each time till it was out!

Hi im having same issue at the moment was up muriwai beach and exact same thing happened had to get my mate in his safari up there to drag me home but i know exactly what you mean i am still trying unsucsesfully to get it off i am having same prob none of the four flange bolts will move (the ones i can get to that is) so resorted to attempting to pull apart in place in order to get a clear view at those four with a powerbar or something have allready used a sh*t load of crc have been spraying even whilst im not working on it in the hope it might soak in.
Any tips advice or anything would be much appreciated because im about ready to put it on trademe and buy another hilux

The best way i have replaced my turbos is to undo the 4 bolts holding the core to the exhaust housing, undo oil feed/return thru gaurd, undo c clip on wastegate remove water pipes and wiggle it out slowly much easier

Don't use crc, not strong enough. Get some Chemz Penetrate. Also a tooth brush sized wire brush and clean up the threads

Hey Guys, sorry to bring this old post up again but I have the same issue. Turbo oil feed seal is f***ed. I have been attempting to take the turbo and or manifold off for 3 days now with no luck.
1 of the top manifold bolts is now round because the c**t is seized. And 2 of the bottomw manifold bolts seem inaccessable. Also 1 of the top 2 turbo bolts is pulliong the stud out instead of just the nut vcoming off, and again the bottom bolts seem impossible to get to.
DOes anyone have any helpful ideas or picture diagram of how they got it off?
Also i need a new turbo has anyone got a good spare laying around?
Any help would be greatly apprecfiated. Cheers

do it as i said above far easier, then it will give you more room to get to the 4 bolts that hold it to the manifold, if you get it all off cut all the exhaust flaps out with that big vaccum pot on the side of the exhaust, gives you alot more room for future and reassemble

12 mm ratchet spanner helps heaps. Other trick is to liberally spray your favourite penetrating oil over the bolts each night for a week before removing the turbo. When I wrecked Lewises truck I snapped 2 head studs but that didnt matter on a siezed engine
