Its a long time since I had to worry about these things but way back when the rear facing seats were secured by the seat belt except for 2 issues. First you need to lock the belt. Baby factory sell a clip for this purpose (on a side note these clips are also good off road to prevent the belt retracting when you jump out on a steep hill so you cant put it back on). Second disable the airbag if you have one. I thought it was a requirement that a baby in a rear facing seat must be visible to a driver or passenger just so they cant drown in there own puke. Putting the seat in the rear means always carrying a passenger as well.
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
