Air compressor from aircon

Postby ecw23able » Thu Nov 10, 2016 8:53 am

Just wanting thought a on this before I decide to do it.

I have heard one can degas the A.C. remove the hoses put a breather filter on the inlet and run either an airline to the bullbar to use as a tank with a pressure switch to control the clutch. Or just put a straight connector on it for an airline to use for pumping tyres.

Either way my questions are would this be an effective compressor. What would max pressures be. Could you use the bullbar as a tank at 60-80psi.

Google air con tyre inflater for lots of ideas. Wont answer the bull bar question as pressure vessels are inherently dangerous if not designed properly. Even 80psi could kill you if your unlucky

Only problem I can see is how do you lubricate the compressor then. Others are using the blowby from the rocker cover and connecting it with a breather to the inlet so it does vacuum the engine but allows oil in. Only problem I see is how do you then get the oil out of the air before pumping your tyre with it.

Fit an oil separator. Its not very different to the water separator in a fuel filter.

Hmm this is starting to look like an attractive option. I've found a few adjustable pressure switches that could turn on and off to maintain pressure I a tank. I have an old 1KG fire extinguisher which would work perfect. There charged to hundreds of PSI. I really want some stored air on board for the horn and other things.
