power steering belt

Postby skyna » Sun Oct 29, 2017 5:39 pm

I recently replaced alternator on my Mu, I was told remove back bolt on air con pump to make it easier to do alternator next time. I did this and just today the air con mounting bracket broke in two. I was only using air con pump to run power steering belts, The question I have is can I remove air con pump completely an run power steering pump directly from crank using shorter belt/belts, if so dose any know what size belt I would need and if I could get away with one or do I need the two??
Cheers

Thats only the second or 3rd time Ive heard of that bracket breaking. Should be easy to get a replacement from a wreckers. Removing aircon is easy enough but get it degassed first by a approved auto aircon shop. The coolant is bad for the ozone layer. Can remove the aircon. Dont know the belt size but some Rodeos did not have aircon but might of had a idler pulley where the aircon is.
You could take the belts off and run a string round the pulleys to check for clearances and tie it into a loop to take into a auto parts shop for the belt size
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

I want to do this to on my 4jb1 but the tensioner bracket on power steering pully gets in the way of the belt if you were to use short belt to crank only?
