setting 4jg2 timing

Postby andy120 » Wed Dec 27, 2017 10:50 am

I have changed injector pumps over. The manual i should have 0mm at ~45deg left of tdc and 0.5mm at tdc (by the pulley mark and the pin). I cannot get 0.5mm at either max out or max in. only from 1mm. There is a mark on the arm of the pump and also what looks like a cast line on the mount. Is matching those marks going to be correct timing?

I had this problem in the past pretty easy when you understand using the dial gauge on the 4jg2t so I will try and explain how to do it .
When installing the dial gauge into the back of the pump set the little dial to 2mm make sure your on TDC no 1 piston before you install the gauge.
Then rotate engine backwards until the big needle stops then set gauge to 0 then rotate clockwise to TDC and see where the big needle is if it is out undo the bolts on the pump and rotate pump until you get .05 on the dial big needle tighten bolts on the pump rotate back wards and see if it is still on 0 then rotate back to TDC and see if it is on the .05 one other thing make sure the CSD is disengaged put a screwdriver handle in between it.
The marks are only to give a rough idea when installing the pump they need to be static timed.

By disable the csd, do you mean pull the arm full forward and jam something in to keep it there? On my other pump, the csd was full of rust so i just had a long screw fixing position.

Spot on that's how you do it just remember when you set the dial up the little arrow should be on 2mm to get accurate readings .
I made the mistake of not doing this and couldn't get any where near the .05 setting there are 2 marks on the harmonic balancer BTDC and TDC the first mark going clock wise is BTDC.
Hope this helps you out took me a little while to work out how to static time these engines not much on the net I do have the original workshop manuals on them.
It covers 4jb1t 4jg2t and the petrol 2.6 lt versions efi and carby engines.

Still not getting it. jammed csd about 10mm forward. Inserted gauge to read 2mm at tdc. turned crank ~45 deg, (at this point the gauge is reading 0.6mm) and set dial to 0. back to tdc gives 1.55mm. it hits 0.5mm turning toward tdc after maybe 15deg.

Wouldn't this indicate that your timing needed adjustment? Probably needs retarded a little.

From memory total plunger stroke is 2 to 3 mm?

That is the page i was using to start with. do you mean that the plunger travel is 1.5mm (2 - 0.5mm)? i have 1.1 to 1.9mm travel range.

Some things not right what dial gauge and adapter are you using just a thought when you changed the pump did you lock the cam sprocket and the same on the pump with a bolt in it for TDC when the mark on the crank shaft lined up .
Or did you just take timing belt off with out doing it I cant understand why you are having trouble doing the static timing it very easy to do the other thing I made sure I had TDC on no 1 was by removing rocker cover and check the tappets on no 1 had movement in them unlike the 4jb1t you can take out glow plug and use a wooden skewer to find TDC on no 1 piston being direct injection engine.

What i have found, is that using the mk.1 ear, i have the pump all the way outboard and there is still a slight knock. So im going to have to move the sprocket 1 tooth clockwise. Considering i've just had the front off to fix a weeping water pump, i don't really want to do at the moment.

You don't need to touch the water pump to change the pump position.
The photo I have posted shows you how everything should line up.

When i changed the belt i had it all set like that. Theres something about this pump thats different. When i too the old pump one out, i had the bolt thru the sprocket and the crank tdc and just knocked the pump out. There was no issue with timing for the old pump.

That would really be a pain. x 95 mu. out of curiosity, what is the orientation of the key in the sprocket? could it have been 'moved'.

you mean the keyway I cant see them moving unless worn out I remember geeves getting his pump done on his wizard and there was a problem with the pump numbers didn't match up or something like that.
My experience with different pumps and numbers was when I bought the wizard of Muvit he had bought my old mu 94 4jg2t engine that's in the wizard now had it reconditioned and sent up to Darwin then installed his recon pump of his 96 engine run like a dog white smoke knocking hard to start would not idle ect.
When I bought the wizard of him and got it sent to Sydney I could not time it tried every thing checked the numbers to my spare injector pump different numbers on the pumps so I put the new pump in static timed it no more problems starts first turn of the key no more smoke or knock idles perfect and plenty of power so that's how I found out about different pumps learn different things all the time .

Further to the saga. I pulled the front off to check all the timings, which was per stardog's photo. I checked the dial gauge again, still reading way over. I let the belt go and moved the pump sprocket 1 tooth anti-clockwise, tensioned, centered the pump on the slots and measured with the dial gauge. 0.6mm. adjusted to 0.5mm. Now it sounds like and goes like our other one. A run up the bombays will say for sure for comparison. The other one cruises up the south side no problem at 100k's.
