Water pump replacement 4jg2

Postby saunderson » Fri Sep 13, 2019 7:09 pm

Hi guys,

I have a leak on or near the water pump on my 93 bighorn so thought I'd pull it off and probably replace it. Just wondering if anyone has instructions on how to do this and any special things to beware of? Also what parts should I be buying, just the water pump and water pump gasket, anything else?

Nothing special,,,, take radiator out, cam belt covers off,,, makes it super easy, But prob a good time to do cam belt and tensioner etc,,, Cam belt you will need someone who knows what to do,,, ya gotta lock all pulleys with bolts,,,, if you're happy bout how many kms the cam belt has done, then just throw another water pump at it,,,, If the coolant is mint,, make sure you collect it all with a big fish bin under the car when you pull the radiator,,,

One trick to be aware of. If you buy a genuine pump it comes with a new inlet pipe but after market does not. Holden does not sell this pipe separately. My Wizard had corrosion in this pipe and I could never completely seal it after changing the pump. Always a small wet spot which got pointed out every wof by the mechanic.
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them

If a 4jg2 bighorn pump is same as an 4jg2 MU pump (assume so?) then there are no pipes on it,, it's just a pump,,, I got the GMB one (Japan) from the Isuzu spares place in Auckland,,, One less thing to worry bout maybe?

Thanks guys, was going to get the proselect pump from broomfish as it looked the cheapest at $88 + $5 shipping, unless any one says definitely not to or knows a better price?

Trade is far cheaper and use to buy alot of engine rebuild kits off them, cambelt is like $12 did whole cambelt all seals and ilder tensioner and water pump for just over $100 that was like 4 years ago though and all odd boxes and brands I'd never herd of before, went gear driven now

Def get trade through any mate that's in the trade! Huge savings! And the trade parts suppliers are usually pretty upfront about which brands are actually any good,,, with me , they have been like "we WILL sell you brand A,,,but honestly, buy brand B, cause it's much better quality" and I've appreciated their honesty,,, All that said, it's a water pump, and if you're fitting it yourself ,,, it's not like it's a clutch or rear main oil seal,,, (huge job) If the pump you get fails in 2 years,,, then get another one!! Lol

Damn, wish that was an option but I don't know anyone in the trade, which is a pity coz at the moment I want a water pump, exhaust manifold gasket and turbo gaskets. Just been trying all the online shops plus super cheap and repco to try and find the best deals

Also try BNT. I get most of my parts from there.
