take glowplugs out
gentaly place a screwdriver in the hole of no 1
turn engine by hand till screwdriver is pushed to highest point.
this is tdc for either 1 or 4 To check which you need to check the tappets. If either tappet is open on 4 it is one

When turning the engine do you remove all the belts and the fan to get to the driveshaft or do you use the power steering pump nut to turn it?
This is what I do on my old diesel benz

With the glow plugs out the engine should be quite easy to turn over. I would use the alternator or aircon in preference though as theres no seals to damage

I usually use a bamboo cooking skewer (does'nt damage threads or piston tops if it catches on something and isnt as big an issue if you break it) and turn using a decent socket set and main pulley.

Some people will think this a slow and laborious method but it always works whether on diesels or even full race cams with massive overlap. On each cam lobe turn it to max lift then turn the engine crack exactly one revolution. This is the spot to set that tappet

If remember right the tappet adjustment is 16thou or .4mm for both inlet and exhaust.
Rip the rocker cover off...have to anyway. Turn the engine over till the timing mark on the pully lines up on the pin in the cover.
Try to move the rockers on no1...if they are loose and four are tight you are on TDC no1 other wise you are on TDC 4
If on TDC one,

From here you can adjust inlet exhaust on one, inlet two, exhaust three.

Turn the engine 360....one will be tight and 4 will be loose...so now you can adjust both inlet and exhaust on 4, inlet on three and exhaust on two.

Done

If from the start....one tight and 4 is loose then start from four..ie reverse order.

Fastest way to set any inline engine.

Thanks all for the advice
I made the tappet adjustment and she now purrs like a cat.
THere used to be a nasty shudder in the engine when taking off into turns up hills and this is now gone.
For a novice like me this job was quite a feat.
Those timing marks on the pulley were hard to find but in the end the only things that looked like three little marks happened to be the correct three little marks!
I was a bad boy and turned the engine on the p/s pump nut, but with the glow plugs out there was very little resistance and with the pulley ratios it enabled me to turn the main pulley more slowly.

Very unlikly to do any damage but there was always a slight risk which is why I advised against this method. Its more a case of better safe than sorry than anything else

Do you have a fixed fan? Otherwise you should be able to leave it alone. Just watch your knuckles. :)
