New or 2nd hand snorkel for 88-90 4JB1T Bighorn

Postby mudgrip4 » Wed Jan 12, 2022 5:14 pm

Hi all - have a mate in Chch who has an 88-90 4JBiT Bighorn and he's looking for a snorkel for it. 2nd hand one would be great or a refereral to outfit in Chch who could make one up. Also needs to have it fitted. Had quote of $1000+ which is crazy!! Advice appreciated - could ship one down if available outside of Chch. Thanks Mike

Hi Alan - I think this may be the one. Think. I do remember my 2.8s were fitted with disco snorkels.

How sure are you on this one? I seem to remember mine needed something relocated from just behind the 2.8 airbox. And this kit would need fair bit of flexi as there is no connector piping through sidewall and into box. Flexi ok but smooth piping better for optimum airflow.

My money is on series 2 disco. Looking back as far as 2013 in this forum I found one post for series 1 disco and 10 for series 2. Its not a perfect match though and you do have some work to do. Series 1 is shorter and will need a section inside the guard which will be a pain. The series 2 lines up roughly with the airbox but you need to use a silicone pipe to the airbox which also needs modification to create a new air intake and remove the old one. A possible option would be a Mu or ubs69 airbox as they have the intake in the correct place but the might be even harder to fit.
Otherwise there is always Marly pipe and bends

Yes thanks for that. Looking at photos of my 2.8s with snorkels I think it is this Disco 2 snorkel (1999 onwards).

Just asking trademe supplier (Segedin Truck and Auto in AK) what size/shape inner snorkel hole is, and if there's any connecting pipe - though doesn't look like it. A modded airbox plus concertina hose or silicon pipe looks like the deal. I think the mate fitting the snorkel does actually have a spare airbox..

Ok - got call back from Segedins. The inner hole where Disco 2 snorkel fits thru mudguard is not round - its a long rectangle with rounded edges. Which means the little plate in ad below is for inner mudguard edge:

Question is how to adapt a long oval fitting to an airbox which is round. Would need to have a connector that could flatten for the Disco end but be fitted to a circular projection welded to the isuzu airbox.. Or a 2 part process. Thoughts?

Their disco snorkels have the oblong hole.

Wondering about a heavy round rubber reinforced type hose that would stretch to fit over the oblong bracket at snorkel, but fit over a normal round airbox mounting sleeve at the other end? But then how do you secure it over oblong mount so it won't vibrate off?? I don't see how.. but it must be doable.

Almost need to fabricate an intermediary airbox with flat mount on one side from snorkel, and round exit to airbox.. But bugger all room there though to sit/mount anything.

Or use flat oblong type of hose, then fabricate mod to airbox?

Later - hmmm... just looked at earlier 94 0nwards disco snorkel. Its mudguard hole is round with a connector pipe. Looks a better fit. Thoughts

Round pipe would be easier to work with. The inner pipe though is almost certain to be wrong but silicone hose and a few bends should do the trick
