Occasional grinding noise front right of 96 3.1..

Postby mudgrip4 » Thu Sep 01, 2022 2:37 pm

Have recently replaced g/box and t/case in my 96 3.1 - non TOD model with factory fixed hubs. Brakes also done. But am getting intermittent grinding graunching sound from front right. May last just a touch, or couple of seconds. With drivetrain and brakes all good am trying to figure what it is. Can't find any stones.. Not too much else to the front - CV shaft? wheel bearing (no consistent noise, defective fixed hub? Can't figure what it is. Any thoughts?

It might be the break pads but from your description I would have another look for a stone

First thing I thought of.. Had brakes checked today - pretty good - all good. Where the bl**dy hell could a stone lodge. Have looked everywhere I can. Sometimes this happens, I'll stop and reverse and it goes away. You'd expect a fricking stone to drop out - often do on reversing, but..... Can those fixed hubs give trouble - can't think how?

have you checked the needle roller bearing in back of stub axle? as the cv will be rotating with the fixed hubs

No - trying to find an exploded parts diagram for that. Found this good discussion from 10 years ago on this issue - useful:

Intermittent problems hardest to track. Dam thing is perfect - until.. Will get jack under front this weekend and rotate front wheels to see if bearings ok or rumbling. Process of elimination.

Right. First it will only grind in 4wd unless your free wheel hubs are engaged. The needle roller is a good suspect though. To get at it is a pain although not by Isuzu standards. Take the stub axle off and check it with a finger through the hole the axle goes through. Dive the bearing out from the other side and take the bearing to your local bearing company. Last one I did was about $30. Be gentle tapping it back in

Did check in weekend.. Wheel bearings good, but huge movement in wheel from upper outer ball joint. Real top/bottom wobble - completely worn out. Will start by replacing that..

Ok got to the bottom of the noises, squeaks, weird stuff coming from front right wheel area. Took off and replaced the upper/outer balljoint - it was completely slogged out - hardly held together. With new one fitted ($31 trade) all is now tight, quiet and as it should be.

Still getting red engine light coming on very occasionally and code (so far as these are reliable) suggests crank angle sensor. Mounted down below alternator. May need to try secondhand one as haven't located new replacement. Any ideas re sourcing/working on these?

I didn't think the 3.1 td had a crank sensor do you have a photo of it as I'm curious of what it looks like as when i bought my 94 mu the guy gave me lots of spare parts with it there is one thing labeled crank sensor but didn't fit anywhere on a 94 3.1
engine that i could find if i remember he worked for Isuzu .

From about 96 in the bighorn and 97 in the mu and wizard they introduced an electronically controlled diesel pump. That has the crank sensor. That engine has more power and drinks less fuel but has its own set of extra problems as it gets old. 96 was 26 years ago

Yeah mine is the 96 3.1 with electronic pump - but not the late 96 with TOD. I'll get my auto sparky to also do a code reading on it to try to confirm crank angle sensor.

Not alot of data on this sensor. Will try to narrow it down. Just asked Gavin out at Rangiora if he has any 2nd hand ones - get an idea of where it fits, what it looks like.

Arse...alot less noise from front left now after upper balljoint replacement and brakes checked, but still a groink groink from time to time. I suppose this means that little CV support 'needle roller' bearing. Anyone have a pic, diagram or part number?

Pretty sure I got mine from https://www.sthislandbearings.co.nz/ from a listing they had Its in Kingsley street. Otherwise get the bearing out and it has a number on it. What is your cv to hub seal like? I got that from Autozone in Kaipoi

Cool thanks - might have be extraction then head off to find new one. I will keep that seal in mind too.. Correction - noise is front right not front left.

Thanks for diagram Turnturn. Pilling it apart this saturday.

One question Geeves and others - am still getting 4wd green light remaining on. 96, Auto box, fixed hubs, non TOD model. Recently put exchange transfer case in and checked electrical connections - seem ok. Some suggest its a little vaccuum hose under the power steering pump? Can't think where/what that is - what has a vaccuum line there got to do with 4wd operation? However reconnection or repair to this hose seems to work for some people so will look for this also. Where precisely is this? Thanks Mike

The 4wd light is controlled by a switch on the diff. When you select 4wd a switch in the transfer case activates the 2 solenoids on the diff which allow vacuum to activate the clutch in the diff which activates the light switch. If the light is on the clutch in the diff is activated.
I had the opposite problem in my wizard but my answer was to rewire the solenoids so I could activate the diff separately to 4wd. It was meant to just test the electrics but I quickly realized how useful low range 2wd was when backing trailers so my temporary switch remained blue tacked to the dash for 4 years
My money is on a bad solinoid
