3.1 XS buying advice

Postby justanothernoob » Tue Sep 05, 2023 12:20 am

So 23 years ago when I came to NZ, my first wakka was a 3.2 Lotus Bighorn. That beastie served me well and did many trips back and forth between Auckland and Ruapehu and was just so comfortable for sitting in traffic in The Big Car Park otherwise known as SH1 ...
Eventually the tranny went and I traded it in.

Fast forward and today I'm looking at getting another as a general hack - Woodhill with the MTBs, beaches in summer and Ruapehu while the season lasts.

I'm looking at a '96 3.1 turbo diesel with 300k on the clock. It's had a new engine dropped in two years ago with new water pump, fuel pump, timing belt, head gasket and radiator. Any tips on what to look for in these things when buying 2nd hand?
(Apologies if this is covered somewhere in the group - I did have a hunt around but couldn't find any writeups).

Thanks in advance for the help.

Pretty much standard things. rust engine smoke fumes or noise trans shifting fluid colour drives well etc
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
